DWARF FORTRESS LP
Chapter 1: Histories of the Glowing Shield Clan
Chapter 2: Evil Tidings

Thinking of doing an LP on my own aside from the already running succession game. I won't be playing with specific goals or themes, just a normal dwarf fortress game, that I will document while it's interesting. I'm comfortable documenting in either a journal format or discussing my ideas and intentions from a game perspective, but what would you be more interested to read? I was very brief during the generation game, I'll be a bit more verbose without other people waiting on me.

The second question is which is a more preferable format for the images, stonesense or the standard lazy newb pack tileset? A lot more information is presented in the usual format, but perhaps stonesense is better for a let's play?

Go for it destroid :salute: .

As for the format, I think a journal style works better since you can discuss your ideas and intentions from a durf perspective.

As for the graphics I would prefer the default ascii in all its nonsquare glory, because that is what I have always used and it looks just fine. But if those two are the only choices, go with the 2d one at least. Stonesense blows.

I would say - 2d visuals from newbs pack. It's easier to read and not everyone played DF in ascii, so it would be easier to look at dwarfs, dogs and goblins than at comas, dots and @.

As for the style - go for both. You can write something of a diary from a d0rf perspective, but nothing is keeping you from throwing in some meta-notes.

Good luck, gonna follow it.

/EDIT:

Just one thing in which SS (lol) is better than 2d visuals - the screens are taking less space.
But I think you could just cut the unimportant stuff :)

Histories of the Glowing Shield clan, Neutral Page Kingdom, in the land of Todidefini.

DF Theme

The Dwarves of the Glowing Shield clan have had a troubled history. Born into the Dwarven Kingdom of the Neutral Page, they wanted nothing more than to delve in the mountains for precious stones and metals, a belly full of plump helmets and dwarven ale, content to remain in the northern mountain halls and ignore the petty warring of the lowland dwellers - humans, elves and goblins. This was not their fate. It was during the reign of their first and greatest king, Zaneg Enterarrow that the goblin raids began, in the new calendar year of 24. The attacks came from the lair of the Fly of Trash goblins, ruled by the demon Kodor Smearedgloomy, a great zebra with burning embers for eyes and flames for a tail. It's thirst for violence and dwarven blood is unquenchable. The Dangerous War was short, not lasting the year and the goblins were repulsed, but it was certain they would return once they had regained their strength, and goblins breed like roaches.

KINby.jpg

They returned in the year 35, beginning what would become known as the War of Thunder - a series of vicious yet low intensity raids spanning over a decade, the goblins plundering the dwarven coffers for loot and slaves. The brave king Zaneg Enterarrow lead the miltia of DefenceClasps personally, but was slain during the Assault of Murders by the goblin hero Nako Showerbad, a fearsome one-eyed goblin of unusual size and martial skill. The death of the king would mark the beginning of a long chain of exceptionally short reigns, and to this day the dwarves of the Glowing Shield regard kings as cursed. Unbeknownst to the dwarves of the Neutral Page, worse was in store for them. In the forests to the south, ruled by the Elves of the Crab of Dells, trouble was brewing. While the dwarves were occupied with the goblin raiders, the night walker Mame Roofbud had enthralled the elves and become their druid! His twisted elves attacked the dwarves of the Neutral Page and their allies the Spry Tour dwarves in what would become known as the Assaulted War. The attacks were unrelenting until the year 47, when Mame Roofbud suddenly disappeared from his treetop stronghold in GlacierCovered. Rumour says he was taken for a consort by a more fearsome creature, but none are sure. The elves woke from their madness as though from a bad dream, immediately ceasing their war of extermination against the dwarven kindoms, but the damage had been done. Few of the dwarves of the northern mountains remained, and many of their once proud mountain halls stood empty, or worse, occupied by monsters and beasts from below. It was in this time that the dwarves of the Glowing Shield came to hate the elves for their weakness of mind.

jwUPt.jpg

In the years that followed the dwarves survived in the mountains as best they could. The mountain halls were so poor even the goblins rarely bothered to take what little of value the dwarves had managed to produce. The elves to the south warred with the goblins and humans nearby, waging many great battles. Over time the power of the elves and humans grew, while the goblins shrank to the cold north and the edges of the infinite sea. They were no longer great powers in the northlands, sending forth large armies, but content to raid the farms of the humans and forest retreats of the elves - their demon rulers compelled them and also protected them, for an assault on their dark fortresses could not be attempted without great cost. The humans have come to be the friends of the dwarf, waging war upon both elf and goblin.

***

It is now a time of relative peace, new calendar year 195. In the intervening years, many of the Neutral Page left the northern mountains, claiming they are just as cursed as their kings of old. The elves of the Crab of Dells are at peace, allowing an easy passage to the south and away from the Fly of Trash goblins. The humans to the south, the Confederation of Defence are friendly and their towns will allow us safe passage. It is decided that the remaining clans will leave the northern mountains forever. The Outrageous Mine clan will go first, to test the route and find a safe home - they are the strongest and most numerous clan, once they are settled and established in the south the Glowing Shield clansdwarves shall follow them to establish their own halls nearby.

Excerpts from the Journal of Rakust Clearsalves, head of the Glowing Shield Clan:

4th Granite, 195:
Today we bid farewell to our brothers of the Outrageous Mine clan. Endok Gearoiled leads them in search of a new home in the mountains to the south. Armok grant them safe journey. We have sealed off many of the ancient halls of DefenceClasps, they are of no use to us now.

28th Galena, 195:
Mixed news reaches us today. The Outrageous Mine expedition was set upon by the Low Ghoul goblins of Terrorlurk - they were forced to flee but were fortuitously rescued by a patrolling squadron of Bald Kingdom men, who drove the goblins back. Endok writes that the men were from the hamlet of Padcritter, and kindly offered the dwarven caravan a nights rest in the barns.

gEurf.jpg

6th Sandstone, 195:
I have recieved word from Endok once again - they have reached the BridgedTimes halls of the Mountain Pick dwarves. He tells me they are in worse state than we at DefenceClasps. The caravan shares a little of it's precious supplies and quickly moves on. They will send word once they have established new mountain halls in the south and these poor dwarves can join them.

20th Timber, 195:
Good news. The caravan fares well. Even though it is now winter, the milder climates of the south allow them easy passage on the human roads. They have passed by the friendly larger town of Paintrhymed in the Bald Kingdom, and further south through the hamlets of the Lucky Empires, Clutchpigs and Muscleblotted.

15th Obsidian, 195:
The Outrageous Mines visited the Simple Armours dwarves of Keeperbolt. I hope they did not stay long, there are tales that once they were ruled by a night creature. Endok writes that they have made a deal with them Simple Armours to send a caravan, as they intend to settle on the other side of the mountain range.

ErG7Y.jpg

4th Granite, 196:
Strike the earth! Endok Gearoiled and his Outrageous Mines have founded the new mountain hall of Tuftedcrypts. He writes that hematite is so plentiful it thrusts forth from the ground, as if yearning to be plucked and wrought! We begin the preparations to leave ourselves.

***

3rd Limestone, 196:
The people of Tuftedcrypts flourish. Endok writes that they have received some hungry migrants from the Mountain Pick kingdom, but are well prepared to feed them and put them to work in the smelters. Our preparations are complete but we are snowed in for the winter and will wait till spring to leave the halls of DefenceClasps for good.

***

11th Granite, 197:
We set out today. We will settle near Tuftedcrypts, but we will take a different and faster route - by sea. One of our scouts has managed to strike a deal with some merchants from Sporttome, part of the Confederation of Defence, from there we will sail to the Fortress of Brusheddents and on to Evengold, and continue our journey on land.

3rd Felsite, 197:
We have met with our contacts in Sporttome. The prices they are demanding are outrageous, but we have little choice but to pay - the Outrageous Mines were lucky enough with the Low Ghoul goblins and they were better armed and more numerous than us. Perhaps one day their merchants will visit our mountain hall and we can return the favour. We have a few days rest in town until the ships depart.

ACtFM.jpg

25th Felsite, 197:
We have arrived in Evengold, of the Unions of Dangling. The sailing was largely uneventful aside from the occasional squid or whale, but the sailors seemed to know how to handle them. The worst of it was the seasickness - dwarves are not meant for sailing, I shall never again set foot on a boat if I can help it. Ill tidings are received from Tuftedcrypts, Goblin thieves have been spotted but were not caught. No doubt they will make their way back to wherever they came from and bring more of their kind.

7th Galena, 197:
We trade for some supplies with the men of the Lucky Empires at Fort Horntired. We are not admitted into the city, but they are willing enough to trade. We will give their farmlands a wide berth.

20th Sandstone, 197:
Tuftedcrypts has been assaulted! It was the goblins of the Unseen Lie from The Ticks of Wind, far to the east near the sea. Endok personally assisted in the defence, and the attacking goblins were wiped out by the superior iron weapons and training of the Outrageous Mine clandwarfes. We are changing our destination, we cannot settle in the same mountain range with our limited weapons and supplies and risk a goblin ambush. We will head for a nearby mountain range, the humans tell me it is named The Special Finger.

14th Moonstone, 197:
We have found a suitable site in The Special Finger, in the foothills with a freshwater spring. The area is somewhat arid outside of the streams banks, but the prospectors tell me it has the makings of a good mountain hall. I shall name it Prestigehandles.

Old version

Immediately to our east and northeast are the human federations of the Lucky Empires and the Most Empires. Beyond them lie the Growth of Authority Elves and further still, the hated Unseen Lie goblins. To the north lies the friendly Bald Kingdom men and beyond them the Diamond Sister elves. To the south lies more Lucky Empires settlements and the relatively unknown Factional Realm of men.

I hope that isn't TLDR, it was pretty interesting going through the legends and building a story out of it. I'll start playing the game in the next update.

Should a future version of Dwarf Fortress allow you to build entire civilizations with your fortress as capital and send armies to siege hostile forts, and should in the future someone mod in multiplayer support with those features, it'd be like the most awesome MUD/strategy game ever.

Rough map of our new home:
t98aK.jpg

5th Slate, 198:
We have begun the construction of a new home, here in the Special Finger. The end of a small sandy depression was selected as the site, not too far from the natural spring. We will have plenty of room to expand our fort here and the surface gold promises a wealth of ore to be uncovered. Our caravan has been dismantled and all goods hauled inside, we are here to stay.

sNcd7.png

7th Hematite, 198:
This appears to be a peaceful land. A mix of animals are seen wandering the land, two-humped camels wander in from the sandy wastes to the south and east, while marmots and oxen come from the more fertile north. Our fort is expanding well, I've installed an office and beds so we needn't sleep on the floor and a moderate dining hall to tide us over till something more permanent can be built. The workshop hall is expanded and we have started quite a collection of gems and gold. We have started to dig down to see how extensive the caverns are in this area.

LlyUw.png

23rd Hematite, 198:
Sorry news reaches my ears this day. While we build our new home, the dwarves of Tuftedcrypts face oblivion! A massive force of goblins and trolls assaulted the fort and slaughtered the dwarves within! Some of those that escaped have joined us here in Prestigehandles, though there were few survivors from the once one-hundred strong fort. The leader, Endok Gearoiled was amongst those slain during the Fierce Siege. Struck down by the troll Bax Malignedsavant the Confident Flood of Coils. The beast was struck down in turn and Endok avenged but the fort was lost. The goblins will range far and wide to reach us, it would appear.

15th Malachite, 198:
A few more now homeless dwarves reach us from Tuftedcrypts. I have decided that for all our sakes we cannot remain on the surface, easily spotted by a goblin scout. We will dig deeper and make a new home in the caverns. The surface fort is to be abandoned.

6th Galena, 198:
We have broken through to the caverns, though they do not look hospitable. Bare muck lines the floor, with no water or plants to sustain us. We will keep digging, this maze-like place is no home.

ibTdi.png

8th Limestone, 198:

At last, in the deeper levels of the caverns we find a suitable location a great cavern with the ceiling seven levels high, just mind the pond grabbers. Much wood, plants and water is here, and solid rock to dig out the quarters. We are over forty levels deep here, the goblins should not find us easily.

raHPU.png

rxlNo.png

24th Limestone, 198:
Shifting the fort to the underground has proved more troublesome than expected. It is the wildlife mostly, a troglodyte has struck down our mason while he was carting goods and I've had to raise a hasty militia. They are untrained and have barely more than a few wooden shields between them, but they will have to do. More lurk about, we shall hunt those down in our immediate area. The dwarves are becoming deeply unhappy.

MT6tc.png

13th Timber, 198:
Construction of the new fort is progressing well. The pond grabbers have taken a dwarf from us and the elk birds and camels are making it extremely difficult to gather the remaining materials from the surface fort. I have ordered that the remaining goods on the surface be abandoned, along with the corpses of those dwarves lost in the tunnels to the surface. We have lost 6 dwarves now, we can ill afford to lose more for a few trinkets. At least all the food is inside, and there is much copper ore in our new fort, we shall begin smelting as soon as we have an anvil. Tantrums are common.

YqTuf.png

1st Moonstone, 198:
Winter is upon us, although it is of little consequence to us down here. The fort is expanding well and has become somewhat stable, the dwarves no longer at each others throats over the smallest matters. A proper dining hall has been constructed and we continue to delve deeper into our new home. A trade post has been constructed that we may host a caravan from the Simple Armours dwarves.

PylTm.png

15th Obsidian, 198:
Tekkud Dodokiger, miner was found in his workshop, white as gypsum and stiff as a goblin cap plank. The dwarves whisper that a ghost has taken up residence in the workshops. The dead must be honoured.

XjrnM.png

1st Granite, 198:
We conducted a few minor trades with the Simple Armours dwarves, mostly leather to armour our militia. Our grave and memorials crypt has become quite large already, hopefully it will not require expansion. Otherwise, the fort has progressed well, with domestic production of leather, silk, food, wood and rock products all up to speed. We receive a steady trickly of new survivors from Tuftedcrypts, although I expect we won't see any more. We now number twelve dwarves after the losses incurred by our underground move. One year in and not a single goblin has been sighted.

So basically what I've done is I decided earlier that I wanted to try building a fort in the caverns. This should be much more challenging that working on the surface, and also has the convenience of being closer to the magma for smelting. Then I decided I would do a let's play of it (at this stage I had played through till I had found a suitable location). Then I went back, loaded up the legends viewer and wrote a story about the events that had happened to the dwarven civ (they basically got wiped out by the elves and goblins by about 50, never got off the ground), and made up a story out of the civs they would pass on their trip. The other fort of Tuftedcrypts was the one I was playing before this and abandoned after my population was cut from ~100 to ~30 and many tantrums and executions came after.

In the actual fort, I've had a lot of problems so far - mainly to do with hauling my goods from the aboveground and forgetting the dwarves can't beat camels without weapons and armour. So my old fort was full of animals causing cancellations, and also there were some mole dogs wandering around the cavern, causing cancellations and then the pond grabbers also cause cancellations. Not to bad once I forbid all the gold and crafts I'd made above, the dwarves are slowly clawing their way back to happiness. At least in the caverns wood and food is plentiful. I do have a pretty bad lack of skilled workers right now though.

Anyone know how to kill aquatic monsters?

Very interesting. I have no idea what you should do, as my only semi-succesful fort lies years back and I haven't really played since. But I'm following this LP with great interest, hoping it will spark the will to try again. :salute:

I doubt what is down there is less of a threat than goblins or surface creatures.

I hate myself for having read past the spoiler warning in the wiki, but if you survive, I suggest digging very deep through adamantine.

I don't think water stops arrows or crossbow bolts, so you could try getting a group of marksdwarfs to patrol the shore.

If water does stop bolts, find some good swimmers and have them hack the pond grabbers apart.

Abandoned. I don't have the stamina to document year after year, although I'll still play in the succession fort, which is fun.

Turns out crossbows can shoot through water and across Z-levels.
