Inn of Sorpigal. Inn of Sorpigal. Always the Inn of Sorpigal. It's like the game is mocking us for our lack of progress.
Old RPGs are always slow going. No LoversLab mods either.
We have money to spare, we should fill our packs with some food.
Do they have KFC in this universe?
Yes we would, good dwarf.
Don't take all that food for yourself Scrooge, you'll ruin your good looks.
And so it was that our heroes were finally ready to take on the dangers that lurked below, in the caverns of Sorpigal.
Broseph? What are you doing here?
I'm the dungeon master, remember? I can offer my commentary if I want to.
You're always welcome here, Broseph.
Two doors. Let's go through the grated one first.
You chose wisely, for there is a quest giver down this corridor... but to get to him, you must face a gauntlet of monsters.
After killing these guys and taking their shit, we finally receive our first quest in the world of VARN.
Why would we ever say no?
A simple task.
...If we ever make it to Erliquin.
I'm out of spell points again. Time to rest.
Ooh, new enemies~
Now I can make use of my Turn Undead spell.
There are two more doors down this hallway. Let's investigate.
Fuck this shit. We don't want to die or else we'll end up in the
mortuary inn again, so let's retreat.
With great haste, you manage to outrun the gargoyles and end up back at the entrance of the dungeon.
This time we take the other door.
RETREAT!
We are ambushed again as we go down this corridor, this time by goblins and zombies. They get the initiative.
Fuck this shit! We're not going on without Brady-sama!
We could probably do without him in the party, at least for the rest of this dungeon. Not like he was killing much anyway.
Never leave a friend behind.
But we already did earlier...
This is different Steve! Let's go resurrect him!
Our friend Brady is dead. Can you help us?
The other side is highly overrated.
You could have saved me from the beyond, Broseph, but you chose not to.
Sorry Irenaeus, but SEND is a better paladin than you ever were.
You betrayed me, Broseph, like Liberal before me. I knew alkeides was right about you.
Fuck off dude, we need to finish this Let's Play.
Very well then. Farewell, scoundrels.
After resurrecting Bradylama, we return to Sorpigal's dungeon to finish what we started. We explore the map completely, slaughtering any opposition that we face along the way.
Eventually, we come across Sorpigal's arena, which basically just allows you to do a bunch of fights consecutively (as many as you'd like) to grind for experience. The fights here in the arena seem to be harder than the other encounters in the dungeon, though. We don't make it past the second round.
Not again.
Let's take this opportunity to get me some training, guys.
Returning to the dungeon, we fight a lot more monsters. If you haven't noticed by now, this is a very combat-heavy game (arguably more so than some of the later games in the series). It doesn't bother me much since filler fights can be easily won with Ctrl-A, and the combat system itself is probably the best and most tactical in the series. Still, there are times when I really wish I had the ability to save freely (beyond DOSBox save states, but that's cheating).
A mace! Finally I can be a proper cleric.
At the dead end of a long corridor we find the last group of monsters.
This map tells me that there's some sort of teleporter behind this door.
Come on, gang!
There are three doors in this room. Which will you choose?
Let's do the one on the right.
Famous last words.
Welp.
We'll be right back after some off-screen grinding.
