Ultima VI Part 8

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 8

It's now time to find the three other pieces of the map that Sandy mentioned. I will try to find the pirate near Serpent's Hold first.

ultimavi0908.png

Here is a view of the northern shore of Serpent's Hold. I dock to the south and decide the best place to find a pirate is in the local tavern.

First, I speak to the chef.

ultimavi0921.png
ultimavi0923.png

He asks me to bring back a dragon's egg for his recipe.

ultimavi0925.png

I hand him one of my spares, and he just thanks me. WTF?! I hope I at least got some karma from this! Anyway, I speak to this lone warrior.

ultimavi0926.png
ultimavi0927.png

ultimavi0928.png

I wonder if this guy is the one that gave me the spyglass in Ultima V.

ultimavi0920.png

Now, there are several ways to get this piece of the map.

ultimavi0915.png

I can give her one of the magic shields I already have (and just Clone a replacement ).

ultimavi1020.png
ultimavi1021.png

I can also just pickpocket the piece of the map from her.

The third option is a lot longer than the other two. :(
To start it, I speak to the Japanese-type guy who just wandered in.

ultimavi0982.png
ultimavi0983.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Ugh, can you just make me a Magic Shield?!

ultimavi0984.png
ultimavi0986.png

I have a few gems and bars of gold, but I need to find a 'snake shield.' I wonder where I can get one of those . . .

The answer is, of course, to steal one from Gherick himself!

ultimavi1011.png

I wait until dusk and use the ol' Magic Lock/Unlock trick to break into his back closet. You can clearly see the silvery snake shield.

ultimavi1012.png

Apparently, the 'snake shield' is actually called a 'curved heater.'

ultimavi1013.png

I make sure to shut the door so he won't notice. I then find a place to sleep until morning.

ultimavi1014.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Wow! That took a lot less time than in the last game!

ultimav651.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
A LOT less time!

I now have another magic shield. I head back to Morchella, who is again drowning her troubles in cheap ale.

ultimavi1016.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

I make sure to give her one of my spare shields rather than the one I went to the trouble of making.

ultimavi1017.png
ultimavi1019.png

I now have another piece of the map! Of course I reload and just pickpocket her! While I am here, I might as well explore a bit.

ultimavi0971.png

In the training hall, I meet Loubet, the french fencing instructor from Ultima V. I remember that he was the original owner of the magic carpet and was also a stranger from another world. Britannia sure seems to have a lot of those guys.

ultimavi0972.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi0974.png
ultimavi0975.png
ultimavi0976.png

Training with him would have increased my Dexterity a little if it was not already maxed out. Oh well! I now head for the main hall.

ultimavi0996.png

These people look important.

ultimavi0997.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

ultimavi0998.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Now I remember you!

ultimav650.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
You're the crazy bitch from Bordermarch told me that cryptic hint about where to find Lord British's amulet. What the hell are you doing in Serpent's Hold?

ultimavi0999.png
ultimavi1000.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What's your husband up to?

ultimavi1001.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Cool. What's this I hear about earthquakes?

ultimavi1002.png
ultimavi1003.png

Let's see what her husband is doing.

ultimavi1004.png
ultimavi1005.png
ultimavi1006.png

He does not seem all that helpful. Now, if I remember correctly, the note Chuckles put in Nystul's chest said that a hint lay under a potted plant in Serpent's Hold. Let's find it.

ultimavi1022.png

I wonder if one of those plants behind that locked door contain the note.

ultimavi1023.png

Let's find out!

ultimavi1027.png

The powder keg blows up the door, but the plants have nothing under them.

ultimavi1024.png

The clue is actually under the plant near the northeast corner of the fort.

ultimavi1025.png

Oh, come on!

ultimavi1026.png

Shit! It looks like I need to go to Minoc now. Oh well. I now head to Dagger Isle (the large island due north of Verity Isle) to get another piece of map.

ultimavi1088.png

On the way I pass a waterwheel powering a factory. The attention to detail in this game is pretty good.

ultimavi1091.png

The beggar's hut is kind of hard to find. It is best to approach dagger isle from its northeastern side. The rough coordinates for the hut are 19 *N, 79 *E. I head into the hut to speak with the hermit.

ultimavi1093.png
ultimavi1094.png
ultimavi1095.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Another one of those types, eh?! What is your name?

ultimavi1096.png
ultimavi1097.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Fuck this! Tell me where your piece of the map is!

ultimavi1098.png
ultimavi1099.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1100.png
ultimavi1101.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
House.

ultimavi1102.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Basement.

ultimavi1103.png

Whatever! Let's just search while he is roaming his fields.

ultimavi1104.png

It was just hidden by the harpsichord. I climb down the ladder.

ultimavi1105.png

Well, this guy looks like he has some nice stuff.

ultimavi1106.png
ultimavi1107.png
ultimavi1108.png

ultimavi1109.png
ultimavi1110.png
ultimavi1111.png

ultimavi1112.png

I get the map. Now, let's see if I can open those magic chests without any spells.

ultimavi1113.png

I drop a powder keg by them and light it.

ultimavi1114.png

Come on!

ultimavi1115.png

Come on!

ultimavi1116.png

Damn! Unfortunately, it does not blow up the chests :(

I now teleport to Yew and head west and south to Empath Abbey. The first person I meet is the undertaker.

ultimavi1120.png

This is Glen D'Arcy. If I bring him a corpse (even a party member's), he will cremate them (for a modest fee). This makes it impossible for them to be resurrected.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

ultimavi1121.png
ultimavi1122.png
ultimavi1123.png

He goes on to complain about the quality of the gravedigger's work. I decide to talk to the gravedigger.

ultimavi1124.png
ultimavi1125.png

I talk to him again since I have a spare shovel.

ultimavi1126.png
ultimavi1127.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1128.png
ultimavi1129.png

I keep that bit of information in mind and head to the healer's where I encounter a bard.

u6sionnach.jpg
Greetings, folks.

ultimavi1132.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg

I don't know is this will be helpful at all, but I just felt like including it. I now speak to a lady on the docks.

ultimavi1143.png

u6sylaina.jpg
Hello, milord.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Name.

u6sylaina.jpg
I'm Sylaina Moorehead.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Moorehead.

u6sylaina.jpg
I'm a widow now. I live in a cottage on the beach.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Widow.

u6sylaina.jpg
My husband left me a little money to support myself for a time, but I still like to sew fine clothing. There are few things as relaxing as embroidering and sitting by the ocean, listening to the surf.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Job.

u6sylaina.jpg
When I need money for food and such, I work as a seamstress. Most of the time, however, I live off the seashore.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Seashore.

u6sylaina.jpg
There's always a bit of fish or gull's eggs to eat, with lobster once in a while. I'm as carefree as a gypsy.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Gypsy.

u6sylaina.jpg
They travel the road between Britain and Trinsic. Normally I like them. They're a merry lot. But one time a group of gypsies stole my prized locket.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Locket.

u6sylaina.jpg
My husband left me a gold locket. It contained a piece of an old ship's chart. He said that chart would make me rich. I didn't really care about the chart. But the locket . . . That locket was all I had to remember Nathaniel by. She sighs and looks away for a moment.

Shit! It looks like i now have to scour the road between Britain and Trinsic for some evil gypsies . . . wait a minute! I bet she is talking about the evil gypsies just north of Trinsic!

ultimavi1169.png

Here is a screenshot of the place where all the alchohol is made. Anyway, I warp to Trinsic and head north.

ultimavi1171.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Alright, which one of you thievin' gypsies did it?

ultimavi1172.png

I cast pickpocket on the male gypsy to the north, and sure enough, he has the piece of the map.

ultimavi1173.png

I now have seven of the nine pieces of the treasure map. There are only two pieces left to find.

Fun fact about Seggallion:

Seggallion is from Origin's "Knights of Legend", another of their products. The parallel universe he hails from is known as "Ashtalarea".

I never knew the animate/clone trick. Pretty slick.

MOAR, Ultima LP Brother! *secret handshake*

Ultima VI Part 9

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 9

It is now time to get the last two pieces of the map and then use them to find Hawkin's treasure horde. There I will find the second half of the tablet which is needed to translate to book Iolo found in the beginning of the game. Whew! What an involved quest!

Anyway, I decide to look for ol' Aybarra in Shame.

ultimavi0799.png

Here we are at the entrance north of Lock Lake. I needed a skiff to get here, as always.

ultimavi0800.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Thank you again, Shamino, for telling me shit I already know.

u6shamino.jpg
Just doing my job.

u6shame1.png
u6shame2.png
u6shame3.png
u6shame4.png

I apologize for the crappy layout. That is just the size of the images. As you can clearly see, levels 2 and 3 are split up into to non-overlapping regions. This will become important shortly. I start in the little passage to the right of the central cavern of level 1. I head up and to the west.

ultimavi0801.png

I now come across a skeleton house. I kill its inhabitants and loot the place. I make sure to have Dupre and Shamino pick-up a pick (heh) and shovel respectively. These will come in handy.

ultimavi0802.png

Did I mention that this place is a gold mine?

ultimavi0803.png

Here is an image of some rot worms. They are not tough.

ultimavi0804.png

First, I head down the ladder to the west of the house.

ultimavi0805.png

This takes me to the larger 'upper' section of level 2. The problem is that the way forward is blocked by spider webs. I wonder if I can burn them.

ultimavi0806.png

Iolo throws a flask of oil onto the web. I cannot remember if it works or not. Either way I proceed north. At the intersection I take the east path.

ultimavi0807.png

Yes, Dupre can use the pick to prospect the stalagmites for gold nuggets. When I reach the end of this passage, I double back to the intersection and take the north passage. This leads a long way to the north and then a long ways east.

ultimavi0808.png

This way eventually leads to a ladder down to level 3.

ultimavi0809.png

I then realize that Shamino can dig in the ground for more gold nuggets. I do this far too much. All things considered, this is not a very time-effective way to amass gold.

ultimavi0811.png

Another problem with prospecting is that I sometimes hit water. This can sometimes even block my way forward.

u6dupre.jpg
I wonder if I can make a wish.

ultimavi0812.png

u6dupre.jpg
Damn!

ultimavi0813.png

From this gem's view, I realize I am in the small, 'upper' section of level 3. It looks like I have to go all the way back to level 1.

ultimavi1175.png

I now head to the southern cavern in level 1 and climb down the ladder located along the western wall.

ultimavi1176.png

This takes me to the short, 'lower' section of level 2.

ultimavi1177.png

I have to kill a wolf pack on the way.

ultimavi1178.png

I hope this is the way. It looks like it is. I follow the twisting passage.

ultimavi1179.png

When I come to an intersection, I try the southern passage first.

ultimavi1180.png

When I come to the next intersection I also veer south.

ultimavi1181.png

I follow that passage until I find a ladder down to level 4.

ultimavi1182.png
ultimavi1183.png
ultimavi1184.png

I wander around the 'lower' section of level 4 a little while, but I do not find any sign of Aybarra. It looks like I will have to go back up.

ultimavi1185.png

Here I have to deal with some reapers (i.e. those annoying tree monsters that like to paralyze and sedate my party).

ultimavi1186.png

First, what is a child doing in the bottom of a dungeon, and second, why do my party members automatically target and kill him? I must be rubbing off on them.

ultimavi1187.png

Anyway, I head back up the ladder and take the north intersection this time.

ultimavi1188.png

It looks like the second time may be a charm.

ultimavi1189.png

I start at the very southern end of the 'upper' section of level 4. It looks like it is going to be a long walk!

ultimavi1190.png
ultimavi1191.png

Here are just two random battles I fight on my way. There have been no fights in this dungeon worth recording.

ultimavi1192.png
ultimavi1195.png

It looks like I have found my man!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Let's be sure. What is your name, ragged man?

ultimavi1196.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
[Intelligence] You are lost down here, aren't you?

ultimavi1197.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Fuck this! Where is your piece of Hawkins' treasure map?

ultimavi1198.png
ultimavi1199.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1201.png
ultimavi1202.png
ultimavi1203.png

Fuck yeah!

ultimavi1204.png

As I try to leave, the little bitch asks for more food, and I tell him to fuck off. He then collapses from starvation. Whatever! I now have eight pieces of the map! I now return to Homer, who is once again drinking in the tavern in Buccaneer's Den.

ultimavi1206.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6homer.jpg
Now, I will tell you about how we could work out a deal. I know you want the silver tablet. Far as I'm concerned, you can have it.

ultimavi1208.png
ultimavi1209.png
ultimavi1210.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1211.png
ultimavi1213.png

ultimavi1215.png
ultimavi1216.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1217.png
ultimavi1219.png
ultimavi1221.png

Alright, so he gives me the last piece of the map and tells me where on the island to dig. I head outside and assemble the map on the ground.

ultimavi1222.png

Here is the whole thing! The island in the upper-left corner is Buccaneer's Den, and the island on the right is probably New Magincia. The island with the X is the one with the treasure; so it must lie just south of the western coast of New Magincia. I sail there.

ultimavi1226.png

Here is is! The coordinates are, roughly, 57 *S, 50 *E. That circle of stones is where I begin my search.

ultimavi1227.png

First, I stand in the circle. Next, I walk three paces to the south. Then, I walk nine paces west. Last, I walk twelve places to the south.

ultimavi1229.png
ultimavi1230.png

Here are the coordinates of this location. I kill the nearby hydra (i.e. that green plant-monster).

ultimavi1231.png

Dupre digs a hole in the dirt just south of me with his shovel. I then drop down the hole. I read the tombstone to the north.

ultimavi1234.png

Here lies Captain
Hawkins

He died a hard
death and he
deserved it

ultimavi1235.png
ultimavi1236.png

I then search the bones for some loot.

u6piratecave1.png

Here is a map of the first level.

ultimavi1237.png

It looks like I have started in the northern section. I head south.

ultimavi1239.png

The sign above the hole reads 'Drop to your death!', but there have been other misleading signs earlier, so the hole probably lead somewhere good, right?

ultimavi1240.png

OH SHIT!!

ultimavi1241.png

After I get out of that mess, I run south and find a ladder leading back up.

ultimavi1242.png

I am now in the southern part of the first level. I take a passage west.

ultimavi1243.png

I head down a ladder in the western part.

ultimavi1244.png

This lands me on one of a handful of islands in an underground lake. Fortunately, there is a walkway.

u6piratecave2.png

Here is a map of the second level. I appear to be on the western shore.

ultimavi1245.png

I take the southwest passage.

ultimavi1246.png

This leads to a maze of passages.

ultimavi1247.png

I proceed in a northwesterly direction until I find a ladder leading to the third level.

u6piratecave3.png

Here is a map of the third level.

ultimavi1248.png

I appear to be in the northeast part of the third level.

ultimavi1249.png

I take the eastern passage, and it winds around to a ladder leading down.

u6piratecave4.png

Here is a map of the fourth level.

ultimavi1250.png
ultimavi1251.png

I appear to be in the western section of the level, and it looks like the treasure is in the eastern section of the level. I head back up the ladder.

ultimavi1252.png

I head back up to the four-way intersection, head south, and drop down the hole south of the ladder leading up to level 2.

ultimavi1253.png

NOT AGAIN!!

I head back up to the third level again, and I head for the western part of level 3.

ultimavi1257.png

I drop down the hole located in the northeast corner of the western part of level 3.

ultimavi1258.png

It looks like I have finally arrived in the eastern section of level 4. I walk a LONG WAY to the east.

ultimavi1259.png

I pass by one passageway laden with poison fields.

ultimavi1260.png

The second one is the one I have to cross. Unfortunately, I have run out of reagents needed to cast Dispel Field. What should I do?

ultimavi1261.png

I give myself a few spare red potions, enter Solo Mode, and walk north through the fields.

ultimavi1262.png

The passageway is blocked by a slime, and I do not have any fire magic to kill it. Fortunately, I can just move it out of the way. I head north to the treasure house.

ultimavi1263.png

Rats! The door is locked, and I cannot magically unlock it!

ultimavi1264.png

Fortunately, I brought a long something for dealing with this kind of situation.

ultimavi1265.png

It is now time to head in.

ultimavi1267.png

I leave behind a present to discourage pursuit.

ultimavi1269.png
ultimavi1268.png

Holy Shit! I have hit the jackpot.

ultimavi1270.png

To the east of me is the silver tablet I need.

ultimavi1271.png

This is the Cloak of Storms; it is the one Homer wants.

ultimavi1272.png

This fan will come in handy later. I now head back to my party.

ultimavi1274.png

I am so tired of this dungeon that I just teleport back to LB for healing. This means that my ship is stuck on that island. :(

Alright, we will find out what that book Iolo has means next ti...oh fuck it, let's find out now.

I find Mariah wandering around the Lycaeum.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tablet.

ultimavi1275.png
ultimavi1276.png

Alright, let's do that. I travel to Mariah's room in the southeast corner of the Lycaeum.

ultimavi1279.png

I grab the fragment of the tablet from the table.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
I wonder if I can buy that house that is for sale . . .

ultimavi1280.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Oh, so that is why it is for sale! Maybe I will buy it some other time . . .

I finally find Mariah again.

u6mariah.jpg
Good afternoon, milord, can I help thee?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tablet.

u6mariah.jpg
With both pieces of the tablet, I should be able to work out a translation.

You know, in Elizair's case, the Gargoyle's case for the "False Prophet" being an evil SOB may not be all that far-fetched.

ultimavi1195.png

White peasant...needs food badly!

As much as I adore Ultima VII, this LP is reminding me of one major area where Ultima VI had it trumped - dungeons. Ultima VII's dungeons - like, and perhaps even because of, its crappy combat - often felt toned-down compared to the previous game. Refresh my memory; is Ultima VI the first time the dungeons feel distinctly individual, and their layout/appearance actually seem to match their background as-reflected in the lore of Britannia? Ultima VII was good about that, if nothing else.

Man, now I really want to replay Ultima VI - but I suppose I should continue to focus on my SNES Ultima VII LP, for the time being. Perhaps VI will be my reward for all that suffering. Actually, it'd be pretty cool to replay Lazarus, then play through VI on the FM Towns emulator.

I could always do an LP of Ultima VI on the SNES, though I hear it's not nearly as awful as VII.

its not as bad as Ultima VII, but its kinda dumbed down due to console limitations.
You have a terrifying amount of experience with the SNES ports of Ultima games. I'm one to talk, though - I first played Ultima III on the NES.

Just for fun, I fired up Ultima VI for the SNES. It's a much better port than Ultima VII. Right off the bat, you can enter your name, so you aren't just called "Avatar" by everyone. And you even get a party! Which begs the question - why did Origin's consecutive console ports actually degrade in quality? Were they trying to emulate the Final Fantasy series?

well its kinda easy getting that experience when you are gifted a CD-Rom with about 1500 ROMs for NES and SNES.

Alright, I just beat Ultima VI a few minutes ago. It will probably take several days to finish the write-up, though. I had the perfect evil ending all planned out, but for some reason, the ending sequence will refuse to activate if Armageddon has been cast.

Ultima VI Part 10

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

Part 10

Last time I learned that the gargoyles are not just the stereotypical kill-everybody-cuz-I-can bad guys; they are the stereotypical oppressed indigenous society that I have to fight to protect. However, to do that, I need to find out how to contact them. Mariah suggested that I contact Sin'Vraal, the only gargoyle living in Britannia, so I pay him another visit.

ultimavi1306.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
So, Sin'Vraal ol' buddy, what do you do nowadays?

u6sinvraal.jpg
No job, milord. I am free to wander where I wish.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What do you mean by 'free'?

u6sinvraal.jpg
Among my people, those can fly rule. Though I Have wings, I cannot fly. So I was a slave. Here I am free!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tell me about your people.

u6sinvraal.jpg
I am not a daemon, though humans think so. I am a gargoyle.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tell me about the gargoyles.

u6sinvraal.jpg
I fled here to the Underworld because I was not free among the gargoyles.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Alright, let's skip to the chase. Tell me about this Book of Prophecy.

ultimavi1307.png
ultimavi1308.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Wait, did you say sacrifice?!

ultimavi1309.png
ultimavi1310.png
ultimavi1311.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What did you say about flying?

u6sinvraal.jpg
There are two kinds of gargoyles: winged ones and wingless ones. Wingless ones are mute and unintelligent. They do all the manual labor. Winged ones are smart, and do all the planning and leading. Being able to fly is, to them, a sign of intelligence. Even the Temple can only be reached by the air.

ultimavi1312.png

u6sinvraal.jpg
A human could learn much by travelling there.

ultimavi1314.png

u6sinvraal.jpg
And you cannot fly any more than I can.

Well, this is a pickle indeed! Wait, I remember the librarian of the Lycaeum mentioning a book about ballooning. I wonder if that will be helpful.

ultimavi1316.png

I head into the central chamber of the Lycaeum.

ultimavi1317.png

I cast Dispel Field to punch a hole in the barrier, and then I climb down the ladder.

u6library.png

Here is a map of the library. As you can see, it is a veritable maze.

Here is the first book I managed to find, Tangled Tales. I decide to reproduce it here.

ultimavi1318.png
ultimavi1319.png
ultimavi1320.png

ultimavi1321.png
ultimavi1322.png
ultimavi1323.png

ultimavi1324.png

I find the book I am looking for in the southwest triangular hallway on level 3.

ultimavi2204.png
ultimavi1326.png
ultimavi1327.png

ultimavi1328.png
ultimavi1329.png
ultimavi1330.png

ultimavi1331.png

So the balloonist was from Minoc, eh? I decide to head there. First I speak with the mayor, Lady Isabella.

u6isabella.jpg
Good morning, Avatar. I'm glad thy travels have brought thee here again.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What do you know about the balloonist?

u6isabella.jpg
Ah, thou wouldst be interested to hear of that.

ultimavi1333.png
ultimavi1334.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

ultimavi1335.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Actually, it was quite annoying.

Anyway, I now pay Selganor another visit.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Do you know anything about the balloonist?

ultimavi1336.png
ultimavi1337.png
ultimavi1338.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Who is Sutek?

ultimavi1339.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Where is the island?

ultimavi1340.png

Well, it looks like I will need a ship. Fortunately, my skiff makes a decent substitute. :)

ultimavi1391.png

It looks like sundials only work during the day. That is a cool feature (although annoying in my case).

I now warp to Trinsic and sail my skiff around the island chain to Sutek's island, which is the island where Blackthorn's castle was situated in the last game. I reach the docks and stow my skiff away.

ultimavi1030.png

Holy shit! I have been attacked by killer rabbits!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Run away!

ultimavi1031.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Oh no! It looks I am forced to fight!

ultimavi1034.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
These rabbits are a lot easier than that other one was!

u6iolo.jpg
We did not even need the Holy Hand Grenade.

It is now time to turn our attention to the locked door.

ultimavi1036.png

I now cast Replicate to create a spare powder keg.

ultimavi1037.png

ultimavi1038.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Bye, bye, door!

ultimavi1039.png

Inside is a raised drawbridge. It looks like the wench to lower the drawbridge is on the other side. Whatever shall I do?

ultimavi1040.png

Cast Telekinesis, of course!

ultimavi1041.png

It works!

ultimavi1042.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Weird!

ultimavi1048.png

Here is a (mostly complete) map of the ground floor of Sutek's castle.

ultimavi1051.png

It looks like the way forward is blocked. First, I take the decorative sword off the wall. Then I move the wooden plank aside.

ultimavi1052.png

When I search the section of the wall where the sword had been, I find a secret door.

ultimavi1053.png

Both signs read 'this way!'

ultimavi1059.png

I decide to head left. I cast Dispel Field on the western barrier. I then kill the two-headed scorpion.

ultimavi1060.png

I now have a choice of two magically-locked doors to go through.

ultimavi1063.png

Instead, I will search the eastern wall to find another secret door to a room of levers.

ultimavi1064.png

Unfortunately, Telekinesis spells are blocked by the barriers.

ultimavi1069.png

Since I am (again) running low on reagents, I step into the fire field and take a bit of damage.

ultimavi1070.png

I then dispel two protection fields (i.e. the lightning) around the levers.

ultimavi1071.png

I then step into the purple (i.e. sleep) field and promptly fall asleep.

ultimavi1072.png

Jaana wakes me up with a blue potion. I then head north.

ultimavi1073.png

I then pull all the levers.

ultimavi1074.png

I don't know if this actually does anything, but I pull the chain.

ultimavi1075.png

I then unlock the westernmost of the two doors.

ultimavi1076.png

I search the new cell for a secret door and enter the new room where two two-headed alligators await.

ultimavi1077.png

Oh no! Not another hydra! I just pelt it with arrows, and it dies. Unfortunately, the passage to it is still blocked. I go back to the lever room to fool around with the levers.

ultimavi1080.png

I send Dupre alone to this room to observe the results of my experiment.

ultimavi1081.png

I finally flip the right levers (I can't for the life of me remember the combination to open all the grates.

ultimavi1082.png

This might be it, but I cannot remember for sure.

ultimavi1394.png

Anyway, I search the northern wall of the room where the hydra was to reveal a secret door to Sutek's 'laboratory.' I now speak to the man himself.

ultimavi1396.png
ultimavi1398.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name?

ultimavi1399.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
So you really are mad?

ultimavi1410.png
ultimavi1411.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Alright, fruit loop, tell me about the balloonist who crash-landed here several years ago.

ultimavi1412.png
ultimavi1413.png
ultimavi1414.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yeah right!

ultimavi1415.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
facepalm.gif

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Tell me about the catacombs underneath this castle.

ultimavi1416.png
ultimavi1417.png
ultimavi1418.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What the fuck is a Pushme-Pullyu?!

ultimavi1419.png
ultimavi1420.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Alright, Mr. Sutek, I just have one question before I leave. What the fuck do you do around here?

ultimavi1400.png

u6sutek.jpg
Don't you, milord?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Are you outta your fuckin' mind?!

ultimavi1402.png

u6sutek.jpg
What wouldst thou like to know?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
How much wood would a wood-chuck chuck if a wood-chuck could chuck wood?

u6sutek.jpg
Bah! To hell with you!

ultimavi1406.png

Well, I have certainly done it now! There are several ways of dealing with this mad mage.

ultimavi1408.png

My favorite involves pushing him onto the saw blades.

ultimavi1409.png

ultimavi1432.png

I now head down the ladder south of his laboratory.

u6sutek1.png

Here is a map of the first level.

ultimavi1433.png

It looks just like the view from the gem. Anyway, I wonder what the cells in the four ordinal directions contain.

ultimavi1434.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Holy shit!

ultimavi1439.png

Anyway, the northwest cell contains three sets of levers (along the western wall) and four sets of switches (along the northern wall). Pulling a lever will free one of the silver serpents, and pulling a switch will open one of the four cardinal cells (that contain ladders down to the second level). I only want to mess with the switches.

ultimavi1440.png

I head down the northern ladder.

ultimavi1441.png

It looks like a dead-end.

ultimavi1442.png

I now head down the eastern ladder. Same thing.

ultimavi1443.png

I now try the southern ladder.

ultimavi1444.png

I search the northern wall to reveal a secret door.

u6sutek2.png

Here is a a map of the second level.

ultimavi1445.png

This two-headed horse is the Pushme-Pullyu Sutek mentioned. It is supposed to deliver a cryptic hint about what is the safest passage to take. I just end up killing it.

ultimavi1446.png

I flipped a coin and decided to take the eastern passage.

ultimavi1447.png
ultimavi1448.png

After a mostly uneventful jaunt, I take the ladder down to the third level.

u6sutek3.png

Here is a map.

ultimavi1449.png

I just head around to the ladder at the top.

u6sutek4.png

Here is a map of the fourth level.

ultimavi1450.png

I start in the northeast of the level.

ultimavi1457.png

I find Gorn, the guy who would escape from Blackthorn's dungeons with me in Ultima V, wandering around the southern part of the level.

ultimavi1451.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name again?

u6gorn.jpg
I be named Gorn, milord.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Greetings, Gorn. What do you do around here?

u6gorn.jpg
I be a fighter, a homeless vanderer. Here I vait until I find somevun else to trafel mit.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Trafel?!

u6gorn.jpg
Much vould I like to vander again, but I haf no vun to trafel mit now. Somevun vill ask me to join mit them zooner or later.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Hey, Gorn, how's about joining us?

ultimavi1456.png

Cool!

ultimavi1458.png
ultimavi1461.png

I find the corpse of the balloonist in the northwest corner of the fourth level.

ultimavi1460.png

I search his body and get the balloon plans. I examine them on the way up.

ultimavi1465.png
ultimavi1466.png
ultimavi1467.png

ultimavi1468.png
ultimavi1469.png
ultimavi1470.png

So, to construct a hot-air balloon, I need several things:

1. An iron cauldron
2. A basket big enough to accommodate the entire party.
3. A giant bag made out of spider silk
4. A length of rope.
5. Optional: a ship's anchor

ultimavi1472.png

I stop by Horance's and buy 40 spider silk. I then warp to Minoc.

ultimavi1473.png
ultimavi1474.png

ultimavi1475.png
ultimavi1476.png

While we are here, we might as well recruit Gwenno. Now, where would I find someone capable of weaving a giant bag of silk? I think back over my journey.

ultimavi0172.png

Now I remember! Fyodor of Britain said that Charlotte in New Magincia might be capable of this! I speak to her.

ultimavi1481.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name?

u6charlotte.png
I am called Charlotte Weaver, milord.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Is that your job?

u6charlotte.png
I am but a humble weaver, milord.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What do you weave?

u6charlotte.png
I turn wool into cloth. I am not very good, but some people take pity on me and buy my cloth anyway.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Could you weave a giant silk bag?

ultimavi1485.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Later!

u6charlotte.png
Farewell, milord!

I now warp to Britain and take the road south to Paws.

u6paws.png

Here is a map of Paws.

ultimavi1487.png
ultimavi1488.png
ultimavi1489.png

Here are some random screenshots of exploring Paws.

ultimavi1493.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
This looks like the place.

I speak with the threadmaker Arbeth.

ultimavi1494.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name.

u6arbeth.jpg
He looks around at the ground and mumbles. Arbeth.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Can you spin some spidersilk into thread?

ultimavi1495.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6arbeth.jpg
'Tis a most difficult job, milord. It'll cost thee 20 gold! Still interested?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6arbeth.jpg
Arbeth takes Elzair's gold and silk and starts spinning... Soon he has finished a spool of fine silk thread! There it is, milord, my finest work! A true pleasure! Arbeth hands Elzair the spool of silk. You'll have to find a weaver, of course...

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Where can I find a suitable weaver?

u6arbeth.jpg
I'm not a weaver, milord, just a spinner. Talk to Thindle.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Where is Thindle?

u6arbeth.jpg
He lives here in Paws and is a fine weaver.

Okay, I talk to Thindle.

u6thindle.jpg
You see a little, white haired man hunched over with age. Back, back, back they come. He smiles to himself and claps his hands. Yes, yes, yes," he says, bobbing his head up and down.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name?

u6thindle.jpg
Thindle the spindler. He grins at you.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Can you weave a giant silk bag from these threads?

u6thindle.jpg
Silk? Oh no, oh no.Can't work silk, oh my, no.See Charlotte. She can, yes she can!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Are you talking about the Charlotte that lives in New Magincia?

ultimavi1496.png

Okay, I warp back to Charlotte.

ultimavi1497.png

This is the spool of silk thread.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
I have the thread. Can you weave the silk bag now?

ultimavi1498.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6charlotte.png
Turning to her loom, Charlotte soon weaves the thread into fine silk cloth. Finished! She takes Elzair's gold and hands over the cloth.

ultimavi1499.png

This is what silk cloth looks like.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
So where do I get the bag made?

ultimavi1501.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Where does Marissa live?

u6charlotte.png
She lives in Paws.

*sigh* I travel to Paws again and speak to Marissa.

u6marissa.jpg
Hello.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name?

u6marissa.jpg
Marissa. You may call me Miss Trihune.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Can you make a giant silk bag from this cloth?

ultimavi1502.png
ultimavi1503.png

ultimavi1504.png
ultimavi1505.png

Okay, I now have one part of the balloon. Let's find the other three (or four).

I steal a cauldron from Charlotte. I find some rope lying around. Then I warp to Minoc to talk to the basketweaver.

u6michelle.jpg
How can I help thee this fine day?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What is your name?

u6michelle.jpg
I'm Michelle. Thou needn't tell me thy name, Elzair. The Avatar is famous throughout the land!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What do yo do, Michelle?

u6michelle.jpg
I weave baskets, just like my father and his father before him. My baskets are sold throughout Britannia!

u6maleavatar1.jpg
What do you know of balloons?

ultimavi1506.png
ultimavi1507.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Why don't you take a look at these plans?

ultimavi1508.png
ultimavi1509.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
*sighs* Sure.

ultimavi1510.png

u6michelle.jpg
Hast thou found a silk weaver yet?

u6maleavatar1.jpg
Yes.

u6michelle.jpg
Thou art wise, then. 'Tis a huge bag this will require.

ultimavi1513.png

u6maleavatar1.jpg
To fly, duh!

u6michelle.jpg
Oh, I see.

u6maleavatar1.jpg
I hope you do!

ultimavi1515.png

u6michelle.jpg
It took less time than I had thought it might!

ultimavi1516.png

Well, we have all four of the (required) pieces, so let's assemble it!

ultimavi1517.png

Here are all four pieces along the top row of my inventory.

By the way, here is a neat trick for carrying near-infinite items. First, make sure a character has a bag in his inventory. Next, open the bag. Now, get an item from the world. It will be added to the inventory even if it overburdens the character. The only two restrictions are that the weight of every single object must be less than that of the maximum carry weight of a party member and that the bag must be closed and re-opened for each item picked-up.

ultimavi1518.png
ultimavi2162.png

I use the balloon plans to construct the balloon.

ultimavi2163.png

Here it is all blown up! Let's hop aboard!

ultimavi2165.png
ultimavi2166.png

Similarly to Ultima IV, the balloon moves with the wind; it will move in the opposite direction the wind is blowing from. In this case, the wind is coming from the southwest, so the balloon moves up and to the right with each turn. I can land the balloon on any patch of solid, level ground, and I do so. I then let the air out of the bag, and Gwenno picks it up.

That's all for now! In the next update, I will tie-up a few loose ends before journeying to the land of the Gargoyles.

Good job on the fill-in dialogue for the keywords.
coz
ultimavi1502.png

Sometimes dialogue like this makes it seems the Avatar is a drooling retard who just says "bag"

Here is the first book I managed to find, Tangled Tales. I decide to reproduce it here.

Reads like a grade schooler summing up a 50-page dime novel. wtf is this crap?

Did you...did you just strangle that rabbit with your bare hands?

Charlotte's skillset (bad with wool, good with silk) makes little sense. Or is she just smugly humble?
