Sawyer said on his formspring that Obsidian would make a turnbased game as soon as publishers payed them to do one.

So, what is a publisher acually? A greedy capitalistic pig that only cares for profit? You only have to have large amounts of money you are willing to part with to give to developers and tell them what to do to be a publisher is that it?

Ask Sawyer what he meant?

But yeah, I'd say since most of them are driven by profit, I'd argue that they have no interest at all in an obscure genre like turn based isometric rpgs.

Well ironic thing is... Diablo 3 is isometric, and it will still sell. But most developers nowadays only seem to make shooters. Why not go for diablo's example and go for iso perspective at least? :?

Well, they certainly aren't kind souls merely interested in keeping the spark of isometric, turn-based rpgs alive. They're a business, and since shootan sells more, then that's what they gonna do

But yeah, I always thought publisher = guy with the money

Do you really think it's fair to compare Obsidian to Blizzards best selling super mega franchise that will automatically sell 2 million copies on release day?

And no one is saying it's impossible or even hard to make a good game that is turn based and with an isometric camera, just that they are largely viewed by the public as relics from the past.

Dungeon Sieeeege. It looks nice and Sawyer keeps saying it "owns" over and over again so either it might actually turn out okay or the New Vegas crunch broke his mind.

Arcanum kinda/sorta tried that, didn't work. Van Buren was also going to try that and Sawyer claimed that he wasn't going to repeat Arcanum's mistakes seriously for real (and that the realtime mode was utterly horrible without a pause), but who knows what the result would have been?
