The state of insanity.

who gives a fuck about crappy Morrowind anymore?

I never gave one to begin with. :P

Wasted a total of maybe six hours of my life on that game, pissed and moaned a bit, shrugged, gave my copy to a friend, and then went back to Daggerfall.

FPSOptimizer does nothing interesting, only adjusts the viewing distance as you play and has plenty of bugs.

Let it be known that LlamaGod was once a huge Morrowind dork, like myself.

Die By The Sword

I have yet to play another game with an upside down sword fighting sequence as your character is trapped and hanging in a rope by one foot.

I tried playing Morrowind, but I could never accept the permanent ability drains that some monsters would do, which would necessitate me to remove all of my equipment just to move, ad nauseum...

Every dungeon has shrines to remove those effects .. just saying.

All you have to do is make a donation to a shrine, then choose a blessing. Each shrine is to a specific deity, so each one awards slightly different benefits. From your post I gather you were probably fighting Greater Bonelords, who have the ability to damage your strength attribute. A low strength will reduce your maximum encumberance, eventually making it impossible to move with any inventory whatsoever. In that case you'd want a 'restore attributes' blessing, if the shrine doesn't offer it (almost all of them do) I'd recommend a mark/recall spell and head to a temple. All temples (both Dunmer and Imperial) have shrines, restore your attributes then recall back to the dungeon for your gear.

A much better idea though, would be to just carry some restore strength potions when going dungeon delving. I almost always carry two, you can buy them most anywhere.

Cure disease potions are also, more or less, a necessity. However, I wouldn't bother, the main quest makes you invulnerable to disease almost immediately.

I did hate those greater bonewalkers, or (even worse) mages that summoned greater bonewalkers. Mark/recall and an amulet of almsivi/divine intervention is all you need though. The astronach sign shields you from a lot of it though, as well as turning shrines into super cheap magicka batteries.

Those amulets Mendoza mentioned were my primary solution for that problem. Even while immobilized you could still use them and then dump all the stuff in a safe temple.
