Not on Mercant's watch.

Unless it's a red slime. That would be highly effective. Guess a guy who would skin a monster-girl for money should not be surprised if the monsters get a little rough with him in return. :M

I really want to gun for the boost in mana as soon as possible since most of our offensive spells get much, much better effects to use normally and we can just cram in more mana to boost power of spells and so on. That means 2A. The vitality boost is okay too, since that's one of our weakest stats.

As for the torturing, I'd rather not distract Zayan from important business now that we've brought back the slimes, so that leaves us (rather not) and Rin. I'd rather not personally torture the guy as I don't care about the mercenaries particularly much, so just leave him for Rin to break and yell at her to improve while it's not anyone important.

It's just half a day.

If we could take her off her projects for a week to go slime hunting without hurting our base operations, a single torture session won't harm. Besides, why can't she do both and test the effect of slime reagents on human skin or vitals? I wanted our slimes to get an upgrade against humans anyway. :M

We can't have her testing this on Arlin, can we?

Well Rin would just kill him. Zayan...I have no idea what she would do. It may be best if we handled it, but then again, the codex has a bad record of these things - eg, asking that last guy what he knew about angels...

C>B
C>A - let's max our magical abilities. I want to be at least an A class in one attribute soon and that C+ for magical attack is embarrassing. When we were human it was a B.

edit: what skills did we decide on btw? The front page hasn't been updated.

Just to see if our angel form is a gay sadist.
The gay part aside, that's a great reason to pick it 1C - flopped my original vote. It may be that blood and ultra-violence is what gets us in the mood. Of course, if we get turned on and Rin sees it...

AC.

There is no option to increase our Mana and Magical Defense simultaneously? Those are our major advantages. Anyway, I've been gunning for more Mana for a while now. A better Doppelganger, two Thunder Dragons instead of one, an extra Lightning Tiger, and 3 whole seconds of Battle Premonition in one upgrade. I think this is fair.

Battle Premonition - A short-term precognitive spell. Allows prediction 0.5 seconds into the future for each rank of caster's magical attack.

:rage:

Why did I think it was Mana?

Wait, F-E-D-C - we have 4 ranks in Magical Attack. Why did Arlin have 2.5 seconds of premonition active? :?

It may be that blood and ultra-violence is what gets us in the mood.

Why would a royal prince of Galbaldy - whose last King was a mercenary, by the way - be among the adventurers showing the way to the Galbaldian raiders instead of leading the raiding party?

But he might have some relation to Alexander Whats-his-name, the leader of the Adventurers' Guild. It might be prudent to keep him alive for a while.

You're right. It was my paranoid self once again. Or I misread. Whatever the case, I like how none of the options is a "let's spare the guy/at least ungag him first to see what he has to say". When did Erdrick become so callous with human (males)?

“Oh, uh, when I caught up to him, he was already…” Rin blushes and looks away for a while. “He was the only male in the entire band, and he was… cavorting with his female comrades.”

“He was, was he?” You give the man a withering stare. Not one of jealousy, of course, but any sympathy you might have had for the captured adventurer evaporates faster than a drop of water in a scorching desert. The man glares back, his eyes rimmed with red. It seems that he has been crying.

This explains everything. It might be that the man is actually no-one important and just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, but Erd's frustration is not a force which can be reasoned with.

However, from our choices, C is the only one that ensures the hostage will survive (hopefully).

I'll swap my votes to 1: B>C and 2:A>C.
The former because I wonder what kind of awkward scene will treave write (and how will we invariably screw up somehow) and the latter because it is not a bad alternative to raw mana supply.

Before you return to Grahferde, you set up a teleportation circle in the slime clearing and tasked the slime queen with looking after it. You had also requested her slimes to salvage whatever they could spare on their daily roamings and to hoard it for transport. A forest as untouched as theirs would harbour herbs, perhaps even rare ones, and closer to the mountains there would probably be mineral deposits to be found. You cannot control what they hoard, but the job of sifting through the salvage could be safely given to the goblins. This way, you would have a frequent – if random – source of materials.

Hopefully the Slime Queen will be able to take care of the incoming forces just fine and send the surplus to us. Otherwise, we have given the enemy a literal back-door to our HQ, which is a bad thing. Perhaps we could modify it so that if the correct password is not spelt before activating the circle, the teleportation ends abruptly, giving the poor fool a rather cruel and certain end, Crusader: No Regret style.

I think his own destiny might have affected this somewhat. He was thrown into a sink or swim situation, and he lived, so when someone gets into a problem, he thinks it's due to their own incompetence.

His attitude only changes when there is something for him to gain, be it a favor or a pretty girl's smile.

However, from our choices, C is the only one that ensures the hostage will survive (hopefully).
Why do you think Zayan would kill him? It's not like she is as bad at this as Rin, and a living test subject is better than a dead one. Besides, she has one of those already. :M

Not a lot of them can cast teleport, and I thought it was more of an emergency alarm thing, to be able to get there quickly if something happens.

Perhaps we could be modify it so that if the correct password is not spelt before activating the circle, the teleportation
ends abruptly
Given that we have to give the password to goblins and the like, a password is just as good as no password.

If someone is strong enough to get through the Slime Queen, we can use the teleportation circle as an advanced warning system before they get to it - supposed they even know about it. However, this forest was of no interest to anyone for a long time, so apart from the Dark Lord I don't see anyone going too deep into it.

the latter because it is not a bad alternative to raw mana supply.
Yeah, a moderate increase brings us just one step short of the next B rank. It's a shame there are ways to improve magical defence, but no way (known to us) to affect one's attacking power.

I wonder what happens when we get our defence to S rank. Will we become nigh immune to everything but the most destructive spells?

Actually:
We are at B+++. A moderate increase with 2C or 2E would give us A+.
Magwall - Conjures a barrier that gives a minor increase to magical defense. (+)
Mage's Armor - Magical armor grants moderate increase to physical and magical defense as well as immunity to arrows. (++)
Does that mean we can reach an S rank in m. defence with those spells?

Is there a way to surpass S rank? Or is EX reserved for Extra-terrestrials? :M

Rin progresed a little bit. Getting sapling, someone to intorogate. Would be better if at least one of his companions survived giving us speak or x will die/suffer. I have a hunch there is somekind of screwup behind this, but at least salvagable.

Now, now, I excluded the gay part in the sentence you omitted. Maybe we should have Rin around though, just in case it works and we need someone to, uh, test our functionality on besides our torture victim...

treave Can we lead interrogation, but ask both ladies to assist us?

You'll ask for help if necessary.

we can just cram in more mana to boost power of spells and so on.

Only works for Gigadyne.

Otherwise, we have given the enemy a literal back-door to our HQ, which is a bad thing.

They'd have to know where to go first to be able to use the circle. It's mainly there so you can transport the goods in bulk.

So, treave,

Do defensive spells stack?

What would an S rank in m. defense look like? Shrugging off Fireballs Firestorms? An ability to self-Gigadyne ourselves and be unharmed? Increased resistance to magical effects? Can a magic defense get strong enough to resist a Magic Nullifier?

Is there something beyond S rank for someone who isn't a God?

Since Erd is an Angelic being, I would believe it is entirely possible for us to at least reach an EX rank in one or two magic-related stats near the endgame, if their stories about their devastating powers have a shred of truth. At that point, we would be of such high level, that for all purposes we can be considered equal to or even greater than the Demon Lord from the prologue. By then very few creatures should be considered a threat, such as rival Lords, avatars from the Gods, Greater Archmages, the Masters aliens... and Heroes, of course. :P

However, I wouldn't rule out that characters wielding special artifacts (divine or otherwise) can ignore these rules.

Nevermind, treave has spoken. Maybe we can reach such scores if we were to acquire some sort of "devour soul" power, then start devouring everything in our path. In any case, it will take a long time until something like this becomes an issue (assuming Erdrick lives long enough to achieve his maximum potential, that is).

Lets see what Rin has learned from last torture session and most importantly what kind of questions she asks. Not only she gets more practice, so she won't so easily accidently kill more prisoners, but also get more hamds on experience what questions to ask and when.
She does have theorical knowledge down on torture, but her practical skills are zero. However like any functional living being, practice makes you better....Aaah, I will miss the humorous failed torture scenes when Rin actually learns how to torture properly.

I think I go with offence increase in this one. It brings our magical attack and physical attack near B-level and leaves fever weak areas.
I was pretty tempted to upgrade vitality for that sweet hp increase.

Codexers naive enough to trust Rin a second time hereby forfeit the right to complain when she accidentally strangles this man with his own intestines 5 minutes into the interrogation.

You say like it was something bad that Rin strangles that man with his own intenstines
