Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire
Is the beast even hunting her for food? A bear sized wolf thing nasty claws even on its tail. If it's looking for food, she should be dead and it should be eating her already. Something else is afoot. This is intriguing, but I think this also makes White Knighting even more stupid.

Amending my vote to A2>C2

I want to save the child. The woman is probably dead, but we should give it our best shot.

I don't actually fancy our chances of outrunning it in B1, but scaring it might work...maybe.

Beasts usually kill/immobilize their prey before eating them.

This can take longer for some predators than others. :M

many eyes might make the beast sensitive to bright light, but setting the forest on fire is quite the consequence

direct confrontation can only possibly be resolved by external interference (e.g. a party of monster-hunting knights who were stalking the beast appear and are impressed by our valor - but then it turns out they're all ordained catholic priests, and we're a 10yo boy alone in the forest ffs)

what are the woman and kid doing in a shunned part of the forest anyway? how do we know they're not also fungal bugwolf scorpions in disguise?

will we somehow survive, only to be infected with fungal bugwolf scorpionism? or have to pay alimony for the kid for the next 250 years (typical fungal bugwolf scorpion lifespan)?

dunno, i'll let you fellas who voted to investigate handle this one

What do you mean, the shunned part? We live not far off from a village... close enough that our Master felt the need to forbid us to visit it.

I was considering a "magic ritual gone wrong" scenario or something, but you probably would't take a kid along for one, so ultimately I think it's exactly as it seems, a farmer straying too far picking mushrooms and getting picked off instead. If we hadn't seen the monster before it stands to reason villagers would not suspect there could be one, and think the forest safe... well, as safe as a forest can be, anyway.

The air seems to thicken as you proceed. You are approaching a part of the forest that you rarely visit – animals steer clear of this region of the woods for some reason.

it's not close to the village, where do you get that from?

do women carry babies miles into the forest to pick mushrooms?

We might not have a fire astra at the moment, but at least we can get an early start on our pyromania. Also, I feel like fire would be most likely to work if we want to drive off a beast of darkness. Our wisdom has already confirmed that hunting the beast does not seem to be within our means. At least if "You might have only been hunting for the better part of a decade, but your instincts tell you that this isn’t prey. Not for you, at any rate." is any indication.

Starting a fire or running seem to be the only ideas that won't end badly for us. I'd also favor the odds of A1 over A2. While firing a shot now might be more tempting than chancing a shot later, we're not much good at firing a quick shot and that beast is not something we can really take on at peak condition, so in the scheme of things it's actually safer to try to aim slowly and fire once it has a full belly than take it on as-is. Lurking around the area where a beast resides also sounds stupid. I'd sooner add a C3 of "get the hell out of there and come back a few hours later" than decide to stick around in the vicinity of a dangerous monster.

It seems to be a woman, if you are not mistaken. You are not sure, since you have not seen one in… well, you are not entirely sure how long. Your master forbids you from going down to the village.
"The village". There is a village within a walking distance. Not sure how far it is from where we are though.

When they have no one else to watch them. It makes more sense to keep one with you.

It is entirely possible that this is a Special Kid (TM) and our future plot coupon, but mundane explanation isn't out of the question either.

For the record, I do not recommend A2 (hunting the beast) when treave has explicitly written into the update that this beast is not prey for us.

Alright, I think I'll lock the votes in around 14 hours from now, let's keep things moving along.

You could lock them now if you wanted, treave. We're already at 18 19 votes and the discussion appears to have settled.

We have high CON though. Clearly the winning strategy is to face it in open battle and wait until it exhausts itself.

A2, really? Yeah, if we're going to try and intervene, then fighting it isn't going to go well.

Change from "C2" to "C2>B2" unless someone works out a drinking contest

We're 10 years old.

I know, or at least hope, you're joking though. :M

There's the Codex I know, always willing to come to the rescue of smoking hot damsels in the woods. :M

Edit:
As for cows, the village may have a few. Everything would depend on blast radius.
