I never quite understood the concept behind the bugbear, though.

I think, and am in no way certain about this, that the bugbear may be a creation of some European mythology or maybe of J.R.R. Tolkien's. I'm fairly sure that Gary Gygax & Co. didn't invent the bugbear.

>>Bugbear: It's a bugbear is used to describe a burden or problem, often one producing fear or anxiety. In olden times a goblin was also known as a bug and the saying probably comes from the English folklore goblin (bug) who was said to be in the shape of a bear and who ate children. <<

A professional trainer charges 2,000 gp to rear or train an owlbear (DC 23 for a young creature, DC 30 for an adult).
I wanna be able to capture one, and then have it trained as a minion.

Well, that beats the whole, "Bugs are scary. Bears are scary. A combination of the two would be twice as scary." line of thinking I was on. :D

I thought a bugbear was essentially a variation of the bogeyman, a creature used to scare children?
