This news makes sense, in a way. A recently released build of M&B had a drastically increased number of features from previous versions. I am surprised at the variety of mods being applied to M&B, as can be seen on their mod forums. Post release we can expect even better mods.

For those who bash M&B - It's fun and has great gameplay, what more could you really want? Don't whine about the polish/RPGness now because it is pre-release, and they had more important things to work on. Trust them, they won't ruin a years-long project by rushing things unduly. Truth be told I'm kinda surprised Taleworlds pulled it off(Work was with a man(programming) and his wifey(art), or so I hear).

I didn't realize Mount and Blade is a single player game.
There is a MMO coming out with 90% similar combat. Darkfall Online. Been in development for wayyyy too long, though. Beta soon-ish!

Must there be a story? Can't they just give every faction a sworn enemy and make the goal eliminating it, with or without alliances?

No, there does not have to be a story (/main quest) in the game. But there need to be some aspects of the world that make it interesting, short- mid- and longterm goals that one can achieve besides "kill the bad guys". Think Pirates! gold.

When I hear word Paradox, first word that springs to mind isn't usually polished.

Mount & Blade is fucking awesome! If you haven't played it for a while (like me), the game has heaps of new stuff. Building stuff in towns, capturing towns for your chosen faction (almost wiped out Vaegirs and have all their towns in Khergit control). Combat is as awesome as ever but now there's that "Hey, I'm achieving long-term goals here" which the game had been missing. Getting your reputation up so that you get to own and look after (and collect taxes from) some of the cities you conquer is fun. There's not anything in the way of story that I've seen yet beyond the quests or choosing your own faction though. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing...
