Must play implies there is something unique about them or they're really good.

DQ 1-3 aren't really must plays. Really none of the FF games are must plays, although FF1 is pretty good for the NES. It blows Dragon Quest 1 out of the water for sure.

Don't know how far, probably not much. Got up to the point where you fight outside during the day and there's lots of lancer guys. Can't tell about the story sorry, not only has it been a while but I was also young and just didn't pay much attention to it.

Final Fantasy 8: The most innovative game of the entire jRPG subgenre, if not the RPG genre. Post Apocalyptic Squadbased Phase-based, punk-fantasy RPG (either punk-fantasy or some really long winded explanation to explain and I dont wanna).

Chrono Cross: thematical, fun, memorable. A facelifted Chrono Trigger. What more do you want?

Sengoku Rance: the game that slay them all. If any start badmouthing jRPG, get Rance out and dickslap him silly.

Planescape Torment: because some silly ass around here say it is. jRPG, I mean.

Parasite Eve 2: the RPG-heavy of Resident Evil games. Yuuuummi!

What makes those games a must-play?

A very good question. They are the only JRPGs I have played, and in my opinion one thinking he is a RPG nerd should had played them because they are classic games which started a long row of sequels.

Now I rethink the merits for a game to be included and put more weight on "is it worth the time spent for average Joe the codexer" instead of does it feed academical curiosity. I think Dragon Quests are not worth it for average Joe (even though I happen to like them, they reminds me of C64 days lol).

Will remove update the list based on suggestions battle scarred veterans here say.

Thans for the suggestions and please keep them coming. I will make a personal "these I will play at least" list based on your suggestions and a new must play JRPG posting.

It looks like jRPG subforum got its first dedicated, unfunny troll.

Not sure if :decline: .

please keep them coming
Look for older threads as there were >9000 already and STFU.

There is 2 pages total of JRPG threads and no "must play thread". I addressed that with the OP.

But why you are so butthurt? Are you so sensitive or just plain paranoid that you think I have secretly offended you xDDD

Inspired by /v/ best cRPG list:

First Tier - Great Games:
Chrono Trigger - The classical jRPG, deserves all it's praise.
Final Fantasy Tactics - Best tactical RPG.
FF VIII, IX or X - Three of the best games in the series, all of them with their charm.
FF XII - A great modern twist, best gameplay in the series.
Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis & Let Us Cling Together - Both great tactical RPGs, very similar to FFT.
Disgaea - Great, exotic tactical RPG with humour.
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - Possibly the most loved "non-mainstream" jRPG.

Second Tier - Good Games:
Persona 4 - Best storyfag jRPG ever.
Chrono Cross - "Sequel" to Trigger, tries some wild things and succed in most.
Vagrant Story - Very unique jRPG.
Saga Frontier - Unique game with multiple great stories and kickass soundtrack.
Xenogears - Possibly the most love/hate game on the list, try it out.
Valkyria Chronicles - Great modern twist to Tactical RPGs.
Devil Survivor - Good tactical RPG, blended with SMT monsters.
Pokemon Gold & Silver - Great jRPG, improves the orignal games without becoming a mess.
Dragon Quest VIII - One of the best in the series, bland characters, nice gameplay & exploration.
Breat of Fire 3 - Great game, great characters, you can become a dragon.
Tales of Abyss - IMHO, the best Tales game, storyfag as fuck.

Third Tier - Curiosities:
Super Mario RPG - Solid game, tons of Nintendo fan-service.
Disgaea 2, 3, 4, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Soul Nomad - Try them if you loved Disgaea.
Earthbound - Funny & solid jRPG, not really that special otherwise.
Kingdom Hearts - If you like Disney.
Odin Sphere - Action RPG, gorgeous graphics and weird story.
Etrian Odissey series - Grind-heavy dungeon-crawlers.
World Ends with You - Bizarre gameplay, fresh take on the genre.
Dark Cloud - Building towns is cool.
Digimon World - I LIKE IT!

Alright, I think that now there is a good list. It shall be left this way - no need to compile it as a single list.

I find the lack of love for Phantasy Star disturbing.
Yeah, there are tons of stuff missing, Baten Kraitos, Phantasy Star, Front Mission, Suikuden, Parasite Eve, Wild Arms, those action-RPG from super nintendo era... one day ill make a more complete list, perhaps with pictures too...
