However the game might turn out, I was just hoping they would try something more original.

Yes, they totally miss out the new postapocalyptic gaming trend.

Piranha Bytes makes a game that sounds like Gothic in all but name.

Surprise, surprise.

I first suspected the PBs might have lost most of their creative juice when playing Gothic 2. However, if they try often enough, maybe they manage to create the perfect Gothic game.

Bah, color me unimpressed. They could at least tried a more original approach. This sounds like 'Gothic 3 - The Way It Was Meant To Be' in every aspect.
Probably that's the case. They were unable to do what they wanted in G3, but still think that they can do it right. Deep unsatisfaction with the result may lead to no less deep desire to do the damn thing right and then let it go. If PB were allowed to make patch/expansion to G3 maybe there would not be any need for this "ideal Gothic" attempt. Unless, of course, PB simply can not come with anythig else. And that possibility is also can not be ruled out.

How are you people reading out of it that they want to follow the path they started with Gothic 3? For me its sounds rather like "we tried too much with Gothic 3 and failed - this time we will settle low and go back to proven and ambitionless Gothic 1/2 style linear gameplay"

One would think that a completely new game would give them a chance to be creative. I am hoping for a setting with a theme, like the ones WotC stopped supporting, but it all sounds like generic fairy tale to me.

I don't think that they want to change allot from G1 formula also simply becouse of exp from G3. I rather want small improvements then for PB to risk whit formula again, it is not like G1 like games market is flooded whit games. Let them improve one big aspect (like combat) and have small additions to other elements that is the only way to improve.

What's wrong with G1 combat ? Anyway i agree with you in a way , i mean maybe they are not creative enough or original enough for us but that's what most of us moan about regarding Fallout 3 , if this was BIS making a post apoc. game like fallout would we bitch about them not changing to much ? I know i wouldn't so wtf is wrong with the codex.

the game is set on a volcanic and «forbidden» island

Just so that you don't mistake it with Vvardenfel, Morrowind.

Best wishes to them. If they can overcome shitty combat design and performance issues this time, I'll be pretty much sold.

I like it in general. I like the idea of timed combat, but it has big flaws like you can just left-right swing whit long weapon, no collision detection. When the core idea is good then it is worth polishing.

Sounds very interesting. PB have proven that they are capable of creating a beautiful, living, breathing world and a good story.
