It's simple. Newcomer just isn't in. You have to be in to be indie.

What category should it be finalist / honorable mention in?

Excellence in design maybe?

Minecraft is a hell of a game. I'm also a big fan of desktop dungeons. Amnesia seems to have a lot of buzz (I actually own it but haven't tried it yet). Not sure about the other two. SpyParty seems kind of... pointless.

do remember Newcomer is for C64 and 128, not many of the kids nowadays even know what those mean, while Minecraft can be played through a java screen on their computers.

I don't mean to downplay Minecraft, what I have seem of it seemed fun, but here we have a very simple game, even gimmicky, based solely on the idea of building stuff using colored blocks. And somehow people prefer that to a real, bona-fide rpg game? Am I missing something here? Did Minecraft change a lot?
Did you only play "Classic"? It has it's limits. It's a bit like a Minecraft tech demo.

Near as I can gather from occasional updates on Facebook both auto-translated and otherwise---it seems to still be moving forward, somewhat, but slowly.
