Quitting benzos isn't even that hard if you know what you're doing.
  1. Don't go cold turkey without medical supervision. You can get delirious and/or receive irreversible brain damage, in addition to feeling unbearably awful with anxiety and craving.
  2. Benzos give a paradoxical reaction of increasing anxiety not just when quitting, but also when being addicted for a long time.
  3. Benzos are a CNS depressant so they make you depressed and overall worse off.
  4. Switch to diazepam equivalent dose, could be even 30 mg or higher. It's actually going to feel less anxious at this point.
  5. Get a non-addictive sleep aid, such as antidepresants. Something like an average dose of mirtazapine and/or trazodone will help a lot. You can even get quetiapine in addition to that, but it's going to make you feel more depressed.
  6. There was a website with a .uk TLD that had tapering plans and diazepam equivalents.
  7. Taper off diazepam slowly as much as you can, without turning into a shivering mess, at the very start you can decrease it by 2 mg a week, but to be safe you can go all the way by -1 mg till 15-10 mg.
  8. You can leave the dose for 2 weeks if you get excessive craving, but don't keep it at the dose for more than that or you're going to relapse.
  9. If you taper off below 10 mg, decrease it by less than 1 mg a week.
  10. Tapering off low doses is much more painful
  11. Now either taper it till 3 mg, or immediately go to rehab.
  12. Don't go to rehab before changing to diazepam and tapering some off of it. It's going to be more traumatic.
  13. You're going to be in a complete haze for 2-3 days or even more at rehab. More you taper off, better for you.
  14. If you don't go to rehab, just quit after tapering off to 3 mg and staying at the dose for 2 weeks. It's going to feel awful, but only for 2-3 days.
  15. Don't get discouraged, I finished tapering off at the third attempt after 2 years.
  16. It helps a lot to be visiting a psychiatrist.
  17. Now don't take them again, ever.

Maybe if you tried administrating your codex clone based on a genuine commitment to free speech, rather than whims and bellyfeels, it wouldn't be such a dismal, embarrassing failure.

  19. Edit: don't drink any alcohol for the duration of quitting. It's going to exacerbate the addiction (you can """fix""" benzo craving by drinking vodka, but alcohol has shorter half-life so don't do that).
  20. Edit: mixing benzos and alcohol will give you brain damage. Especially when taking large doses of diazepam, as it has a relatively long half-life.
  21. Edit 2: you can split the diazepam dose into even three daily parts to reduce craving and anxiety, especially when tapering off.

I disagree with some of this advice:
  • The way out of Benzo addiction depends on what you are hooked on. Often it is a short-acting Benzo like Alpazolam (aka Xanax) as it supposedly gives better highs and is often abused in high dosages. In that case, switching to a long-acting one like Diazepam (Valium) can help making the withdrawal easier. Of course, the dosage must be equivalent but this is usually easy to calculate. If you are already on a long-acting Benzo, no change is needed.
  • Given it's very long half-life, Diazepam can be easily phased out as your body has more than enough time to gradually adjust and there is no hard crash as with short-acting Benzos. For the same reason, I don't see the point of splitting up dosages over the day. If you take 10 mg in the morning, most of it will still be active in the evening
  • 10 mg Diazepam is just one pill and I don't think tapering off further by 1 mg steps is useful. You should just switch to taking one pill every other day
  • Antidepressants are addictive and have a lot of side-effects so ditching Benzos for them is terrible advice
  • Benzos don't cause depression, they depress i.e. downregulate your nervous system but they don't cause the mental illness depression
Of course, I am not a doctor nor was I ever addicted to any drug, so please take my advice with a grain of salt.

If you are already on a long-acting Benzo, no change is needed.
Well, diazepam has the longest half-life. Failing to quit is demoralizing so may as well reduce craving and anxiety as much as possible.
I don't see the point of splitting up dosages over the day
Depends on your metabolism. I was about thirty when quitting, and my craving was relatively high. I've had more need for splitting the dosage later on in the process.

If I recall correctly, you're a doctor so you likely don't have firsthand experience. Doctors say all kinds of things, such as thinking that atypical antipsychotics don't worsen depression.
10 mg Diazepam is just one pill and I don't think tapering off further by 1 mg steps is useful.
Like I said, don't taper off by more than 10% at a time. For the last few milligrams, the quitter needs to chip them off. There are devices for cutting pills in exact halves made out of plastic and a razor.
Benzos don't cause depression, they depress i.e. downregulate your nervous system but they don't cause the mental illness depression
The exacerbate existing mood and anxiety-related disorders, if anything by making the person more disorganized and less conscious, thus less able to make themselves feel better.

Note: I made 2 edits to the original advice post, those interested might want to read the edits.
