GameSpot, not to be left out of the recent flurry of previews, has their own preview of Neverwinter Nights 2. Yup, another preview. Not much else to say, so here's a clip:

Each of these subraces will have specific advantages and disadvantages that will help differentiate each of them without making any one of them unfairly powerful. And as Avellone explains, all characters will be able to take an optional "background" feat that further develops their abilities by adding even more bonus skills--at a cost of weighty penalties that balance them out. The designer compares the approach that Obsidian is taking with character creation to the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system of the Fallout games, which let you take powerful "perk" traits that also often carried equally powerful disadvantages. And like with Neverwinter Nights, the character creation menu (as well as the menus you'll be show later when your character advances an experience level and earns more skills and feats) will offer "pick for me" buttons that will make the game choose optimized picks for players who don't care to constantly roll the dice to see if they're getting drunk. You'll be making these choices (or letting the game do it all for you) all the way up to a character level of 20--which, in 3.5 Edition rules, is an almost-godlike level of power.

I never quite understood the "Pick for Me" stuff in the first game. Is there anyone that actually used that thing?

I think allot of players unused to the D&D PnP game appriciate the "Pick for me" button.
I've seen that allot of players on NWN forum uses this option when playing.
Makes it easier to focus on the real-time combat i suppose.

Meh. Even newbies would be better off taking the time to elarn the system. If you don't create your own character; you are likely not gonna understand how said character works for a much longer time. This is true in pnp from my experience, and in video games as well.

I think it's fine to have the option there; but I would *never* use it, and I think anyone who does is only shortchanging themselves.

I despised the OC for NWN 1, but admittedly am intrigued by NWN 2 and the promises it won't suck like the first one. Then I saw the little ad on the sidebar touting this piece of work: "The greatest RPG of all time is back! NWN 2 Preorder now!!!!!1111" And I nearly puked. Let's hope it's not a bunch of PR hype leaving us with a steaming heap.

Since when did a company mislead us with PR hype? :)

I know it's rare

Then I'm reminded of the delightful ad outlining how I would be made John Romero's bitch through the leet styling that was Daikatana. Ooh, maybe Chris Avellone et al will make us their bitches with NWN 2!
