Since Mask of the Betrayer has so many different options and outcomes, we'd like to spread the word about it and a contest with prizes directly from the developers is a good way to do it.

How to play:

Take a MotB screenshot showing an interesting in-game event, an event that requires certain past actions or choices and may not occur in every game, and submit it to us, explaining what exactly we are looking at and how you managed to achieve that.

A few examples:

The only way to get One-of-Many to join your party is to devour Okku the bear god's spirit, thus killing a potential party member, pick up his husk, talk to the spirits in the Shadow Temple and instead of devouring the spirits, throwing them out of the crematorium, or putting them all to rest, you pick a dialogue option offering the husk to the spirits.

That's too simple though. Here is a better one:

IF you find an Imaskari rod, and IF you use to open the passage out of the barrow, a lich contained within is released. IF later on you go through the front entrance to see the Coven, the lich shows up and helps you handle a hostile encounter with a bunch of undead peacefully.

Take a SINGLE screenshot of the conversation between the lich and the unfriendly undead, and explain the situation similarly to what I wrote above.
Click here to see the rest.

Thank you for making a spoiler thread and putting it on the frontpage, VD.

Also, that lich thing is pretty cool. I was conditioned not to expect any consequence for an action in the dungeon exist outside said dungeon, so I just killed him. C&C at it's best, I guess.

Dammit. I was hoping I could win a copy of MotB without first owning MotB.

Nice feature-thingy you got there.
A good way to spread the value of choice and consequences and the games that do it. Aside from criticizing, that is.

Now I just need to buy myself a computer and the game so I can join the fun.

:( I deleted almost all my MotB save games yesterday to make room for The Witcher saves (the MotB saves took more than 5gb). I've kept a few though so I still may find something interesting.

Too bad you already mentioned the one with the lich. Still there are a lot more events that require past choices, just not so well hidden as the one with the lich :P

Btw, anyone managed to devour the Founder's soul? I tried but failed (Akachi's will was stronger).

perhaps a spoiler tag is in order

anyhow, I'm looking forward to the results, seeing as I'm not going to have a machine that can run MotB for a long time

**MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!**

Yes, you need to have devoured Myrkul. I think that's enough. If you had devoured Myrkul and still couldn't devour her soul that must mean that you have to devour both Myrkul and the Woodman.

By the way, if you kill the founder you lose 35 influence with Safiya, if you devour her, no matter how much influence you have with her, Safiya leaves the party and attacks you. That's the reason why you can make the amulet of the betrayer (you need 4 souls from your companions to make it) even if you have full influence with Safiya.

There is also a point where you can devour One-of-Many no matter how much influence you have with him (if you let him devour Myrkul and then talk to him without any other companions present). I speculate there should be such a point for Okku, if you decide to devour his forefathers but I haven't tried it.

So as far as I know the only companions you need to have very low influence with for them to attack you are Gann and Kaelyn (even if you devour Gann's mother you just lose some influence with him).

**END OF SPOILERS**

Start taking shots then. If not for the prizes, then do it to show what the game has to offer.

The first prize seems more like Obsidian's prize. First prize: A redeemed pirate!

Change the prize to "an explanation where the fucking broken scythe blade for Myrkul's scythe is supposed to be located" or even better, why it's MIA. Then I'll think about it.

Can't really think of anything fitting enough to submit in the first place even though I completed it 3 times, but I guess it's because I'm incapable of playing a good character and everything else has already been mentioned.

*spoilers*

It really disappointed me that I never got any consequence for properly completing the ritual for the lich in Shadow Mulsantir and leaving him to do what he wished. I was almost certain there'd be something considering the notes about the person he hated and shit. No consequence for giving away the book and encouraging the Kelemvor priest apprentice either.

I think nwvault.ign.com needs to have the contest as a headline. They did mention it in their listing of your review, but that's very minor. A "MotB Contest" headline would garner much more participation.

It's possible, if he saved extremely frequently and never deleted them. My save folder is 700MB, and I mostly just used quicksave and an archive save every hour or two.

How are those module reviews coming along, aboyd? ;)
Dead in the water now, I think. I posted comments about one a couple of weeks ago, probably my last module review for a while. Any play time I have for the next few months is going to MotB, Witcher, and Kingdom Hearts (with my kids). Hopefully someone else will take up the mantle!

Having actual screenshots would go a long way promoting the contest. So, how about it?

I would do it, had I only the game in my possession. Haven't got NWN2 either, and planning to buy the Witcher, so I might just buy NWN2 and MotB together with it. If I can get enough money together, of course.

I've got the first 3 sets of submissions. Thanks, Alex, Mike, Jennifer.

Changing rules: you can submit more than one shot for each in-game event. Looking at Alex stuff it really makes sense to show a series of shots rather than one (if you have to).
