Skyrim Morrowind was the game that placed this gameplay loop on the map for other developers to start copying.
Has anyone ever actually copied Morrowind though? It seems to have been mostly a dead end, Bethesda just reiterated on that until it became what it is today. Skyrim was Bethesda's big hit and their most influential game. It got so big that you could even blame it for the direction the new Zelda game took.
but it feels like less of an rpg than Witcher3
Because this is a shooter, not even a very casual ARPG.

Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim are the same game, except with increased reliance on algorithms (and Morrowind was their last PC game). It also saved Bethesda from bankruptcy and made everything possible. Even though it is one of my favorite games, in a way I wish it never happened.
