It makes you walk slower. From the update:

It's subtle, but notice that Aloth is wading through the sand, a new feature in Deadfire that adds another dimension of challenge in combat.

Words fail me when I try to describe how little I care for the new sand effects. Maybe they meant 'sound effects'?
Real time soil erosion was a very popular feature back in 2006. I'm glad Obsidian understands the importance of soil science in an RPG.

Surprisingly, POE was localised and released in Korean, and seems to have a decent online presence, though I can't know how well it sold.

It would appear that it sold well enough that Obsidian views it as a reasonable investment for the sequel.
