Not much to discuss. There's the legal side and then there's the morality side: you can debate the morality but there's no debating the legality. This is true for all forms of piracy.

Up until 24 days ago 85% of my game collection was pirated. Then I stumbled upon a couple Humble Bundles (both the Indie and the Origin/Steam ones), and got involved with a site where you can earn games by completing surveys so...I went all Moral Fag and deleted around 300+ gbs of software. Wasn't that bad, I hardly played a majority of them.

It's kinda weird seeing a game that interests me and not just heading off to the Pirate Bay.

So? What happens when the game's not available anywhere else, as with some older titles? Laws aren't perfect.

Money morals are good for when you have money.

They actually aren't. In more ways than one to have money is a result of not having money-related morals. Morals are the fastest way there is to become middle class.

I agree with Metro. Can't really argue the legal aspect. As for the morality, not one to judge but I don't feel right doing it so only play games I can afford. When it comes to video games piracy, I have the strongest negative feelings regarding piracy of indie games. Maybe a reflection of the hate I feel for certain publishers? *shrug*

(He's talking about books but it pretty much applies just as well to games or any other form of entertainment. I sure as fuck wouldn't be nearly as obssessed with video games as am I if not for all the games I played at a friend's house, rented, or borrowed.)

I pirate old anthology television shows, and emulators. It's the only reasonable way I can keep these pieces of dead entertainment alive. I'm not gonna pay some 3rd party $50 for season one of Friday the 13th, they can eat a dick.

All pirates should be hanged like their forebears.

¡Sentenciado estoy a muerte! Yo me río; No me abandone la suerte, y al mismo que me condena colgaré de alguna antena, quizá en su propio navio. Y si caigo, ¿Que es la vida? Por perdida ya la di, cuando el yugo del esclavo, como un bravo, sacudí. ♪

Doesn't matter, it's still illegal. I don't have a problem with people who pirate games just people who pirate games then try to rationalize it.

I get your point, but piracy should be encouraged *AT THE VERY LEAST* as a form of fiscal self defense; specifically in regards to videogames. I've made this point before regarding this topic: with developers lying, developers not releasing demos anymore, publishers bribing reviewers, companies hiring guerrilla marketing shitheads to make Youtube accounts and thumb spam their videos and comments to the top, the only way to know if the game is good or not is to play it, and you shouldn't have to blow $60+ just to see how badly you were lied to.

I understand although I'm sort of out of the loop on that as I don't partake in many AAA games these days. Other than maybe X-Rebirth there aren't any I'm anticipating in the coming months. That way I avoid most of the $60 pricepoints and seedy industry shit.

Should we just let old games in legal hells die and be forgotten then? I don't need a 'reason' to pirate, btw, I'm just talking about titles that can't be obtained any other way, I don't see how that should be illegal given that the other option would be watching it wither and disappear.

It's illegal because someone owns the rights to them even if that someone is a third party that had no hand in creating it. They don't cease to lose their rights to something just because they're arguably mismanaging it. Also it's not as if a video game is a herd of cattle or some natural resource that can be squandered or suffer amelioration. The Gold Box games are still the Gold Box games even if they aren't available for purchase anywhere. They're aren't melting or getting worse. Would you want someone to tell you what to do with your property?

I do illegal things every day and I don't have to have a fucking crisis about it.

And I'm not implying that you should. Plenty of 'de minimis' illegal activity goes on every day but the fact nothing is done about it doesn't render it legal.

At one point freeing a slave was a crime.

Still, I do like to support developers and PC gaming in general. I don't mind paying full price for a great game or $10 or so for an decent game in my genres. I have the money. Whatever.

Sometimes I demo a game I am really on the fence about, but this is super rare. Usually it's when I am really excited about something but am just a little too unsure to spend full price.

My main pet peeve is with stupid copyright law changes to open up the asshole for corporate America. I don't respect that shit and anything older than 10-15 years is free game for me. This includes NES and SNES emulation mainly, but also PC abandonware. I don't mind paying GOG $5 since they do a nice job (usually) of setting things up and making it hassle-free.

Not according to the immense Vade Mecum I own and has pretty much any law of relevance in my country. I could crush a man's cranium with that thing, and I've looked inside it more times than I want to.
Also, the police, the courts and the state have better things to do than go after pirates. Those machete negro rapist gangs aren't going to arrest themselves, you know.
