Why the hell would you play 16-bit graphics games in 2024??

Edit: Also what game is this? Doesn't look like what they're talking about.

I wouldn't. But I would play the 2001 PC remake "Only You -Re Cross-" because it has english translation and thus suitable for recording a let's play.

There are three versions of Only You:
  • Only You - Decadent Juliettes, which came out in 1996 exclusively for the AliceSoft fan club. It was developed for PC-98.
  • Only You -Re Cross-, which came out in 2001 as a public release featuring redone graphics and music, as well as expanded (and reworked) plot and two more dateable girls. It was released on PC.
  • Only You -River Cross- , which came out in 2002 as an all-ages release for Playstation 2.
Of these, Re Cross has an English fan patch. River Cross has voice acting and animated cutscenes. Decadent Juliettes has the superior art IMO.

I don't believe anyone has actually played Rance Quest to completion. There's no way. Anyone who says they played this game and didn't give up after a few hours is simply lying. I don't think I could design a worse RPG if I tried. How the fuck did this happen a few years after releasing the best jrpg of all time?

I didn't do the NG+ cycles, but I played all the quests in the regular game. It's fine? It's very much a fan service game about hanging out with all the characters, and that was fun. It's no Rance 5D, I tell you what.

Worth noting that Rance Quest wasn't designed to be binged, but as a bite-sized dad game. You come back from the office at eleven at night, play one or two quests, and go to sleep.

I think RQM is one of the better games in the series! (X and sengoku are a lot better, but it might be 3rd best)
There's a lot of variety in party composition, trying to get through combat without using all your actions is a fairly interesting optimization challenge and the writing is entertaining. I heartily recommend using the double xp mode to reduce grinding though.

I will also note that evenicle is RQM gameplay except with all the interesting bits sawed off, just like how 03 is 01 with all the best bits removed.

So if you make the choice the game deems "wrong" here, the game just ends, you just get a game over. It's not ever a real bad ending (that would be perfectly acceptable, Nabokov's Lolita has a bad ending and it's still a masterpiece), you just get a YOU DIED screen, for nothing else but making a choice the game treacherously presents you with. How is it different than a Ubisoft game failing your mission after you leave the area's imaginary walls? It is despicable game design. And it is so dishonest. How about, if you don't want me to try and fuck Oda Nobunaga's hot little sister, just don't make her hot?

How about if you want to touch little girls you just play Blue Archive like the other sex offenders do?

Funnily enough, I thought RQM gameplay was a degraded version of Rance VI gameplay. Degraded because it's the same basic idea, but RQM destroys the resource management aspect by giving you a giant roster you can use where as in Rance VI the amount of people you can swap in was pretty limited.

I think it's two different twists on the same idea. VI limits the amount of times you can use a character in combat but lets you adjust in between every battle. RQM limits how many times each characters skills can be used, and also limits how many times you can adjust your party. So in RQM you cant just swap in your best team every hard fight, because two swaps is pretty costly (especially early on, lategame you can probably do it). VI characters also have a pretty constant strength ranking between characters, whereas in RQM recently deleveled characters drop a lot in ranking, so you have to have very dynamic teams. Both twists elevate their games a lot, but I think the one in RQM is better overall.

I do think RQM only allowing 2 backliners feels very limiting, as one of them will have to be a healer a lot of the time.

I tried it but I find the gameplay lacking

This is from the 15th of September, 2024.

Translation
Today was the 83rd birthday of Seiji Nakamura, the oldest president of an erotic game company in Japan, and I visited him at his home. He said that he has been replaying "Rance IV: Legacy of the Sect" recently ("In the end, Sill is the cutest...") while praying for the release of "STALKER 2" in November. He was as cool as ever.

I believe AliceSoft doesn't have a good idea for backliners at all, reaching as far as Rance VI, and continuing into Sengoku. Ironically, Evenicle fixed the issue by removing variation altogether, and making pre-defined party members. It's kind of inspiring that across franchises they always keep trying their hand at the idea of positioning, though, with Dohna Dohna being yet another take on it, this time inspired by the Dorkest Dungeon.

I don't agree on that. VI has normal backline stuff (ranged units can fire at any line, melee only closest) and plenty of characters that go in either line and lots of potential formations. Sengoku even moreso, although the front line is more important as that's where your core units tend to go. It's RQM that messes it up by essentially only having 1 backline slot, which severely limits your options for combos.

Rance VI begins with a very lacking roster of backliners, with Prima being more or less a wasted slot for most of the time and Megadeth growing obsolete very quickly. This remains so until you recruit your first mage. Mages just bring so much more to the table (excluding Maria, but only after investing a lot of time in improving her) that other classes are more or less worthless, Sill herself kind of invalidates the support line by being both a mage and a healer. It really doesn't open up until very late into the game, at which point you'll be overusing Rizna for almost everything anyway.

Rance X fully translated

But only 5% edited. So not coming out any time soon.
Meanwhile, Rance 03 is 88% translated and 79% edited.
So probably they are releasing that next year (2 years between it and IX).

Yeah, with the doubled XP mode it's not that bad, especially once you get some characters that let you skip/ignore fights. Certainly miles better than 9, which I don't think I'll be able to play unless I can find a trainer or cheatengine table to skip the combat or at least speed it up by a factor of 10 or more.

Fear not: they go hard lolicon with 8 and 9, just keep playing.
