Last update was:

Rance IX – The Helmanian Revolution is now 100% translated and 38% edited!
Rance X - 28% translated (and presumably 0% edited)

This was how things stood in late February iirc according to a mangagamer tweet.

So progress is definitely being made, probably a bit
clear.png
optimistic, but maybe IX could make it out for early next year. Won't dare hope for it to make this year.

As an aside, given the prior translator drama, I recall XSeed making a big deal of the script size for one of their Trails series localisations (think it was TiTS:SC) and how long it was taking as a consequence but last I checked it seems like Rance X has that beat by quite some way.

Has anyone here already played Rance IX and is able to share their five cents about the gameplay proper?

The gameplay and character system is functional but not brilliant. I also prefer the smaller cast (compared to RQM). The battles are not pushovers but are not particularly difficult either, although the enemies do have a fairly steep difficulty curve. I occasionally had to grind battles (you can replay battles just like in RQM for xp and gold) for xp and gold for equipment upgrades. There's not much difficulty curve, each character has their special attack and its pretty simple to figure out how best to use them.

I don't doubt progress is being made on Rance 9. Maria is the stated translator for it, she and the editors are probably (slowly) plugging away at it. I'm sure we'll see a release somewhere in the next 1-30 years. I'm surprised about Rance X though; someone asked Maria about it once on her twitter and she was vague in her response. I don't know who but her would be working on it. If that is/isn't the case I'm not sure why they wouldn't announce who's doing the translation.

Alicesoft saw how much Evenicle 1 sold - very good numbers, since it got released on Steam - and decided they would put out Evenicle 2 themselves, also through Steam. Then Steam said they wouldn't put it on their platform because porn is sinful (or whatever horseshit explanation they put out that makes them not release some adult games except for the ones that they do). Now Alicesoft seems to be debating whether to release it at all if it means the lower mangagamer type sales numbers. They had an English twitter account they were using to hype up Evenicle 2's release that they were updating almost every day. It hasn't been updated since early February since they got the bad news from Steam (except a couple times to hype up Rance Quest's release).

Is it the kind of situation where you have to know the right person at valve in order to grease the wheels and get your lewd game on the store? Seems odd that they would go back on being willing to sell #2 when they already did #1.

I get the feeling that Valve works like this and you need to tweet at Gabe or someone of similar status to have them remind the underling SJWs to quit being bitches.

When Evenicle came out, the SJW loons that randomly cancel erotic games (or sometimes VN games with no porn because "mu schoolgirls!", even when they don't show up) weren't around yet. It was AFTEr Evenicle came out that all of this inanity began to happen. I may be misremembering, but I swear someone said something about "never allowing Rance to be released on Steam".

Afaik trying to release anything nsfw on steam, especially something that is more lewd than just the occasional .png in otherwise sfw gameplay is like playing russian roulette. Sometimes the person reviewing your game is liberal and approves it, next month maybe someone flagged it and the reviewer is a prude and bans it, and then you complain and a 3rd guy comes in....

But I also get the feeling that it is becoming worse over time, being more prone to banning games for no clear reason. Gaben should have made sure to hire better staff.

Steiner is the literally who that worked on Evenicle 2's TL
Pretty sure this is his youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxvbc1C2Hhxpv7Gd8D8MDkg/videos
So he has done some stuff before, including fan translations of Rance X trailers, so he seems to be some kind of fan of the series. Looks like he's translated Steins;Gate and most of the rest of the games by that developer. So I guess it's in good hands? Can't wait for a third set of terminology for devils, dark lords etc.

I hope he didn't do the Robotics;Notes one. It was so bad that it required a fan team to extensively fix it.

I would say another change to terminology is likely. Steiner was involved in a lot of the Alicesoft fan-translations way back in the day (like 10 years ago, Rance I/II type stuff) long before Mangagamer got involved for official releases. A lot of the name changes came from debate between Arunaru and Steiner. Steiner may leave the continuity of it alone or may just say "fuck it" and go back to what he had been calling things. Mangagamer may have the ultimate editorial say on this but if he's gung-ho about it, I doubt they'd stand in his way if it meant X getting released sooner. Arunaru tended to prefer translations he felt were more technically accurate (not literal, this isn't that debate) as opposed to sounding better. You can see it pretty clearly if you compare the Rance X trailers they both independently translated - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqyEY8H76TY vs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6PQkUusTVs. I never got into the Aru hate, but his translations were, uh... lacking a little poetry to them.

This actually probably means a more delayed release too. Aru and Steiner seemed to have become friendly with each other again, but they definitely differed on their translation philosophy. There were claims Aru had already translated something like 25-33% of the script when he left. Steiner will probably re-translate all of that - I doubt he'd leave text translated that he doesn't agree with, knowing his name is going to be slapped on the whole thing.

(As for Steam censoring, one of Mangagamer's programmers - Doddler - has talked about this. As far as he can tell, what gets through and what doesn't is completely random. I doubt it has to do with greasing the wheels either; small studios will get shit through sometimes when bigger studios don't)

Valve has such a high amount of "fuck you" money and any nsfw anime game is going to be nothing in comparison monetarily speaking. I'm sure its 90% about whether you get lucky and get your game in the queue of a non-SJW, or have some kind of personal connection in Valve who can make sure the right person is dealing with you. I'm sure Valve's well-known "open" work environment is at fault since it means that the people who are approving games are the ones who want to be in charge of approving games and not making them, i.e. the SJW losers.

Hilariously this got approved: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1350710/Evenicle_2__Clinical_Trial_Edition/ despite it being completely upfront about what it is. Yet the actual game can't.

The Evenicle 2 demo didn't get entirely approved. There was one sex scene (two underage teenagers) that was entirely removed and replaced with someone just narrating the encounter. It's been a while since I played it but I think it all had mosaic filtering too. A lot of people (on here too) were concerned that was going to be happening a lot in the Steam release. Worry no more! There will be no Steam release.

Valve's policy on porn is so convoluted - as well as their explanations on who gets banned - it's hard to say what the problem is. Social Justice Warriors are a convenient target, but it might be the religious community, Standards and Practices, media pressure, monkeys throwing darts at a list; hell, with Evenicle 2 they had to be aware of international pornography laws since it had to conform to Japan's just getting out. It doesn't help that pornography laws in certain countries are notoriously vague in art (certainly in the U.S. where Valve is based). The most likely explanation is a small group of people asking "how do we cover our ass on this release?" Maybe Valve will change there mind. In the meantime maybe someone can make a Half Life mod that replaces all the characters with naked anime girls.

More progress:
Rance X - Showdown is now 34.5% translated and 3.5% edited!
Rance IX - Translation: 100% Edit: 62%

Rance IX late this year is starting to look somewhat likely.
