Edit2: I am talking Gothic 1 points away and giving it to Princess Maker 2
Dude! Put them points back to Gothic! I'm serious!
(You can let that weird other game be in your post as recommendation for newcomers or whatever, but don't take points away from my beloved Gothic!)
Pleeeeease!

Blame the rules, not the player.
Everyone already know that Gothic is the best. You didn't give points to Gothic 2. NOW I AM BUTHURT :rpgcodex:

I'm only listing the ones I've played, a lot of classics still in backlog, but I'm confident in my masculinity to be honest about it.

Baldur's Gate 1
with TotSC (quite a few touches of a Gygaxian feel; swingy combat is the best combat; incredibly tight plot for a game, hell for a fantasy anything, really; encounter design among the best in genre; Durlag's Tower is a best dungeon in a non-dungeon-crawler)
Baldur's Gate 2 with ToB (purposeful selection of spells from what DND provides that is fully utilised in encounter design resulting in completely unique take on DND combat; as a result, its combat system and encounter design stand at the top of the genre; some impressively large quests and a nice touch with class specific strongholds)

4 points:
Planescape: Torment
(horrible combat, both conceptually and in execution; but brilliance in all other areas saves it)

3 points:
KotOR2:The Sith Lords
(the fact that it's the best entry into the whole SW franchise after OT elevates it, despite mediocre gameplay; has a staying power that original KotOR lacks)
Temple of Elemental Evil with the Co8 patch (underrated as hell, a game that has shown that the broken DND 3.X can actually be used to produce interesting gameplay, Reach and Trip mechanics are highlights of combat system; smidgets of a Gygaxian feel, just like BG1; the game's title though, egads)

1 point:
Jagged Alliance 2
(its reputaion precedes it, most probably deserves far more points... but have played it too little as of yet)
Ultima IV (several mechanics and concepts that still have not been equalled in plenty of following games; but just like with JA2, at this point have not played it enough)
Knights of the Chalice (even though it's overrated and I'm not sure if they're not falling under plagiarism law, what with bringing some TSR modules into the game with miniscule alterations, while giving almost no credit)
Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures (Dryer's modules are interesting and the tools seem to not lack much compared to NWN's, what can I say)
Shadowrun Returns (who else is gonna throw a bone at this game, really)
