I think people are qualifying Sacred 2 as a disaster since it caused Ascaron to go bankrupt, but Deep Silver has taken over and is planning a third installment. While Sacred 2 has hundreds of quests, some of them are specific to the character or the type of game(open or campaign). Be aware that neither Sacred 2 or its expansion will have any additional patches.

Never played it but Sacred 2 looks to be pretty much the same as Sacred with better graphics and maybe a few tweaks. As far as its flaws you can check out the official forums but they don't get much in the way of developer traffic anymore. Ascaron was bought up by Deep Silver who dropped all support for the game and never bothered to make the expansion available in the U.S. -- oddly enough, however, they have plans to make Sacred 3 although the last news on that was an announcement nearly a year ago.

'Not-in-inventory' methods (am I doing it right?) aside you can probably buy it in most stores for around $10-$20 with the Gold edition (Sacred 2 + Ice and Blood expansion) only being available in UK and Europe. So for that price it's probably worth it even with the bugs. It does use SecuRom DRM so that might be an issue for some people.

As far as the original I've only played for a couple of hours but as people have mentioned it basically plays like Titan Quest.

Here's a walk-through on youtube you can check out if you can stand the guys voice and awful jokes.

Gamemaking is a gamble. I'd never call a game a disaster just because its developers went bankrupt making it. That's "labor of love" territory. And sometimes new companies make third installments, doesn't make the previous games disasters, either. ;)

The lack of future patches is a bit alarming, but most of my favorite games are riddled with bugs, I've built up quite a tolerance.
