Dhruin was lucky enough to get his hands on a pre-release version of Eschalon: Book 1 and has posted his first impressions at RPG Watch. Expect to get your mouth all watery.

Eschalon is a welcome return to classic stat-based CRPG gameplay, with crisp graphics reminiscent of Arcanum and a presentation quality that sets a new standard for indie roleplaying games. Despite some question marks over the combat, we can’t wait to delve further into the game for a full review but in the meantime, grab the demo when it is released on the 19th and prepare to be hooked.
To be honest, I'm already hooked. I'll get the demo no matter what.

Thanks for the first impressions Dhruin, I'm looking forward to your full review.

BTW, the official release date of the full version is also the 19th.

Thanks, Brother None.

The graphics look nice but 800x600 resolution? Come on.

Niiiice! I'm getting the full game if I like the demo, and it certainly looks promising.

Shame about the Max Res, but I guess I'm kind of used to it after all the years of Fallout, Arcanum, PS:T, etc.

Last time we had so many great RPGs in one year was in 2001 when Arcanum, Wizardry 8, and Gothic were released.

Great preview, Dhruin!

It doesn’t take long for little, relatively insignificant things to bring a smile as they evoke a sense of old classics like the Ultima series.

Consider me officially excited.
I am looking forward to playing the demo.

Looks very promising, but I agree with the preview on the combat. The combat sounds rather shallow and uninteresting. I'll have to try it out myself when the demo comes out.

People are giving the dev a hard time over graphics and combat...

Personally the story/setting is what I'm worried about.

Serpent in the Staglands Dead State Torment: Tides of Numenera
sounds rather mediocre, especially the combat, but interesting enough to give the demo a spin when it's out.

Everything sounds great besides the generic amnesia starting. Hopefully, combat isn't as rougelike as it sounds.

+1

I could care less about the graphics, but what I've already seen is just ok.
also 800x600 is an OK resolution. Actually I could care less about the resolution either as long as interface fits well and everything is comfortable.

it's two more days left

Whew! At first I thought it was another "amnesia" plot, but then I realized...

Oh wait, it is.

I have no memory of any such games being done previously. Oh wait, who am I? What am I doing here?

The 800x600 windowed is perfect for playing on the job. And it looks awesome. The music from the trailer sounds nice. I just hope combat is not dull...

It really sounds great, better than I thought. The less detailed combat isn't much a matter to me, since I don't play for the combat. And it looks like it's delivering some amount of roleplaying, even though there is no dialogue skills. I like the more realistic system of light and shadows. Hope it opens options for stealth gameplay.

Also, it looks better than Arcanum. The technology seems similar, but the graphics work better than in Arcanum, especially the characters.

Edit: posting while drunk isn't good for clarity
