Merida, again
I can't get the GoG version to work with the widescreen mod. Makes things painful. Otherwise I would be replaying the fuck out of that game.

I DID IT !

I got to this level :

beat this guy :

and at very, very long last, I get to this switch :

It took me 20 years to get there, so I light a joint, flick the switch, activate the shield and finally watch the end movie firsthand.

To say that I enjoyed the moment would be an understatment. It may be just ones and zeroes, but fuck... that felt satisfying.
Last level enemies.

Yes...that's what you get for getting the "good" ending in LOL2.

(As for Dawn - 6/10, would bang again if given the right cirumstances.)

There were so many other things I wanted to say about Roxor's pics from Lands of Lore, but I couldn't tell whether he was joking or trying to be serious, so I skipped it.

Lands of Lore is amusing, like it was made as an intro to blobbers... first area is short and easy as hell:

Later you get stuff like this, full of secret walls, teleporters, puzzles, plates, etc..:

Westwood's "pixel art" cannot be beat. I've seen plenty of it through the years (especially recently) but Westwood's efforts always rise to the top.

If I may digress onto another topic...there is a concept in game design that I like to call the "Quadruple Lock" that Lands of Lore is the best example of in all of RPG history.

The QL (abbrevation) is usually put forth like this: When you've progressed through most of the (role-playing) game you're playing, you suddenly find yourself being forced to find four distinctive parts to solve a lock that's slammed down in front of you just before the fight with the Big Bad. Usually the QL's only purpose is to serve as last-minute filler. Gothic 2 has one of the best singular cases of a QL (that gate you have to pass right before the End Boss fight) but Lands of Lore 1 has the best variety of examples of the QL - mainly because it has three of them.

Darth Roxor posted a screenshot of the first one - the recipe that the Draracle gave to Kieran in order to create the Elixir of Tybal. This QL is the most lenient one - it's presented early and with plenty of clue hooks provided (in case Roxor and/or other players are in need of hints for the recipe, try clicking the recipe scroll on various people you come across throughout the game - they'll give clues and/or outright answers) and yet needs to be solved before the plot can advance, let alone before the game can be completed. This wouldn't be so bad if it were not for the other two QLs. One is provided with about half the leniency of the first QL - the four pyramids to King Richard's casket. At least it gets plenty of foreshadowing, so it's not that bad of a QL - but it's the final one that really gets to me, and follows the stereotypical manner of how a QL is presented to a player. At this point the player has found King Richard's casket and should have all the pyramid parts AND the Elixir of Tybal. So what's the problem? Somehow King Richard's casket has become tainted, and to remove the taint the player needs to find four statues and place them at certain points in the same room as the casket to dispel the taint. This last QL comes COMPLETELY out of left field, it does NOTHING but delay the game and add meaningless filler, especially considering the fact that the player needs to progress beyond the point of the QL in order to solve it - and in doing so the player may accidentally trigger the final fight, but be unable to win it because the QL hasn't been solved yet. Now how's that for shitty game design?

Once you become aware of the Quadruple Lock, you'll start seeing it everywhere. Gothic 1 has a Quintuple Lock, but otherwise it's precisely the same. Even Thief: The Dark Project has one, but I'd like to see the taffer who thinks that the pursuit of the four pieces is dull and boring. Ultima Underworld has an octuple lock, but I've yet to meet anyone that didn't get engrossed with looking for the eight talismans of Sir Cabirus.

The point is, it's not whether you include this mechanic or not, but how you include it. Doing it wrong will bring the whole game down. Doing it right will at least give your game some structure.

The only company I dare say comes close (but still didn't rival) Westwood's pixel art was their "rivals", Dreamforge, with stuff like this:

Anvil of Dawn, in particular, is gorgeous:
