I remember playing Zeliard at a friend's house way back in the early 90's. (review)

Were there any other worthwhile games of this type (especially for the PC)?

There are a bunch of the NES. Faxanadu is p. good. And of course don't forget the infamous Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. Then there are all the Metroidvanias. Most of these games you can emulate on a PC.

Unepic's a recent one that's p. good, the demo's fairly long, too, and you can keep playing it from the end of it after you purchase it.

You might want to check La mulana. It is a homage to msx side scroling rpgs, its hard with many puzzles and adequate length.

It is out for free for pcs so give it a try I enjoyed it a lot.

So, you want to play a side-scroller (linear)/platform (action) role-playing game? Why don't you just get a console?

A console game: But there is one game within the castlevania series, which is said to be extremely good within the genre you are looking for, I just can't remember the name of it: Is it symphony of the night? If I remember correctly, it was also quite open ended, even though it was a side scroller.

I think this game was rereleased for DS, which in that case means that you can play it on the PC with a DS-emulator. Playing games on DS-emulators works extremely well, as the touch screen interface of the DS goes well with mouse and keyboard.

dem castlevanias

I played through ALL of them things and burned out on early Order of Ecclesia

I will say just play Aria of Sorrow and then Dawn of Sorrow if you really liked that
or you could just play Symphony of the Night again because that one is seriously still the best in terms of well everything except for maybe crafting and definitely the final boss

Just make sure you don't spoil yourself or anything when you play SotN for the first time, there are few "hidden" items that can break the game. Or spell "combos" that are imbalanced. Just struggle through blindly and you'll have the most fun.

I think the remake he was referring to was the Xbox Arcade port.

Y's The oath of felghana is damn good if you can stand anime characters. It's on steam and it's also hard as fuck. Very good combat and platforming with some light rpg and puzzle elements. Fucking awesome music too.

The Paper Mario series on N64/GameCube/Wii is really good, and the Mario & Luigi games on the GBA and DS are also quite nice. Same goes for Super Mario RPG on the SNES although I don't like it as much as the later "sequels." Some people might dismiss them for being for kids etc. but they really are quite funny and entertaining, and the combat is pretty decent as well. Lots of secrets and whatnot to find compared to modern RPGs, too.

Good games, wrong thread. Technically, of course, you are correct but these games clearly have have a lacking of action and platform elements. The wii game fits, but who the hell wants to play a game with a tv remote, especially one that abandoned its fan base. Paper Mario is a fun series because it's easy and novel, but it's the kind of game series that critics and children love since they don't have to put any effort into playing it.

Yeah you're right, although I will say the DS games definitely have a solid amount of platforming. They're definitely on the easy side but honestly, I'll take consistently fun and easy over soul-crushingly difficult most of the time (if only because most uber-hard games are usually hard in the worst ways).
