Yeah the DS games looked really good, but my fear of carpal tunnel kept me from playing them. I tend to go back and forth between easy and extreme difficulty when I game for some reason as well. I'm really hoping Obsidian nails the South Park RPG since it seems to be of a similar vein.

That cover is the best cover I've seen in ages. That's the kind of awesome shit you get when you don't have to go past a marketing team.
hardcoregaming is on a roll lately, go into the main page and see their articles.
look at one of the latest:

Holy hell these games look great!

Another vote for faxanadu. That game had exceptional atmosphere, the world looked wonderfully bleak and the music was fantastic.

Anybody recommending Ys III.. GOD, do yourselves a favor and play it's remake, Oath in Felghana on steam. May not be pure 2D, but it's leagues better and has just as much platforming involved.

well, there's this

http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Metroidvania

For the platforming genre, "RPG elements" mean pretty much stat/ability/item persistence from one stage to another.

A few you may not know about:

Bunny Must Die (PC) - cute and fun, a bit on the hard side and some back-tracking

Maze of Galious (MSX, NES) - legendary music, exploration and no hand-holding - Unepic's granddaddy (a better game, too); not kidding, these tunes will get stuck in your head

Magical Pop'n (SNES) - cute, solid game with skills and magic and girly girl protagonist

Wonder Boy IV (SMD) - a polished Zelda 2/Castlevania 2 formula at work

Wonder Project J (SNES) - it's like Black & White in 2D (you control your hero indirectly - and teach him by punishment/reward) - lots of stats here; it's more fun than it looks.

Wazhack is a pretty good side-scrolling turn-based roguelike (so not action). Not a full-fledged RPG but like many roguelikes it has decent RPG mechanics.
