why is game art always so bad nowadays?

talent declined
So did taste.

There are perfectly decent artists out there, it's just that lots of devs prefer shitty modern styles over good traditional art.

Check the character and environment art of the recently released Terraformers for example, no cartoonishness there:

Point and click adventure games also have decent artstyles, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow is one of my recent favorites when it comes to visuals:

When it comes to strategy games, the Definitive Edition of AoE2 looks pretty great. Yes, it's a remake of a renaissance classic, but they added several new architecture tilesets and environment assets, which all look excellent and mesh perfectly with the original style:

Shitty cartoony artstyles are a choice, not a necessity.

Weird thing to write in a thread about homm-clone, what with homm2 being arguably the best looking game ever.

Art-wise this one is another title that makes me think people who used to shit out flash games for newgrounds are now industry veterans. Sf/apo homm clone is not the worst idea in the world, though.

Homm2 is a good game and the art in the game in this thread is not great looking, but I never really understand why people think Homm2 art is so awesome, it looks sort of like shit.

It was fine for its time, but it was not on par with Fallout or Baldurs gate, or any of the Jagged Alliance Games which were all released around the same time. Even Panzer General II looks better and perhaps PG 1 as well, which was released years before. If a game with the art below was released now you would all call it cartoon shit and juvenile crap.

Has nothing to do with if I think HoMM is a good game or not, I played it at least 200 hours or more I am guessing.

Yeah, JA1 looks way better than HoMM2  Dude, you could've at least given examples of games that are somewhat relevant and can compete when it comes to pixel art, like some of the Westwood games, for example. Instead, just poor taste, sorry.

If a game with the art below was released now you would all call it cartoon shit and juvenile crap.
Oh yeah, for sure. We get so many good looking 2d games now and no pixel art looking like someone tried to emulate Atari 8600 while suffering from a stroke that a game like Homm2 would not stand out at all. And it's not cartoonish, more fable/fairytale like and very unique. Those scanned 3d to 2d pseudo-realistic models from 3 were a p. big decline, although 3 still is a beautiful game in its own right.

This screenshot is distorted and has some weird blur applied that makes it look crappy.

Will it have RMG though? For most players it's the one thing that kept HOMM3 alive and popular all these years.

The most remarkable thing in this thread is that sigard the retard said something right for once. But that does not say much, even a broken clock says the time right twice a day.

Personally I love art in I, II and III (IV is fine but V+ is an abomination), but for different reasons.

I has baroque art resembling old Grimm-like fairy tales. Large, beautiful assets.
II is more contemporary but still very colourful and fable-like. It's like an improved iteration of I.
III has more photorealistic graphics (it sounds weird but that's how I see it) which still looks very nice but not so great as II.

I think there's an argument to be made for III's map being the best looking in the series, but the more artsy stuff (portraits, units, UI) is a clear win for II. It just edges it when it comes to the overall atmosphere.

Could have sworn we already had a thread on this been on my wishlist for 6 months now and fairly certain I heard about it here.
