GameOver has posted a review of Silent Storm giving it an 87% rating. It's got a few spoilers in it, so I'll make that clear with this:

WARNING: This review has some bigtime spoilers if you're new to the game.

Now on to a clip that doesn't have big spoilers:

Each member of your crew can belong to one of six classes -- engineer, grenadier, medic, scout, soldier, and sniper. However, just like in choosing between the Allied and Axis powers, there isn’t as much difference between the classes as you might think. Each class gets a unique skill tree, but that’s it, and there aren’t any restrictions on the activities your soldiers can perform (your engineer can use a sniper rifle and your sniper can pick locks, if you want). Worse, many skills are shared between the classes, and it’s only their placement in the skill tree that changes. So character development isn’t the best part of Silent Storm.

Good luck on getting that sniper picking those locks successfully.

Actually, all classes being able to do stuff like try to use a sniper rifle, makes much more sense then the game not allowing it.

You're missing the point Dan, the engineering skills are shit in this game. A pity really.

I don't think it's so much a problem with the skills themselves. It's more of the fact that there aren't many opportunities to practice in them. (Unless you spend all day arming and disarming your own traps.)

By the time that you really need your engineer's skills, the traps/locks are way over his head and usually end up blowing up in his face.

This could be the reason why engineers, or all characters for that matter, develop faster when staying at the base. I guess they recognized this problem and did not want to force people to take engineers out in the early part of the game, since they were not needed.

There's also the problem of lockpicks/mineshovels having limited "charges", which mean that you can't use them as often as you need to get good.

Which is another thing about the engineers, you actually *shouldn't* take one early in the game since by the time you actually *need* one, the ones back at the base will have much better skill than if you had taken one and actually gave him field experiance.

Like I said, a pity. Really bothers me that engineers just arn't worth taking, better off just taking another grenidier or sniper.

Yeah, that was part of my point. If an engineer can BARELY do it, and more often than not, they fail.. There's no way a sniper will be able to do it.

But still, it is good that all skills are accessable to all the classes, but there's no way in hell that an engineer or medic will ever be as good at sniping as a sniper nor will a soldier or scout ever be as good at healing as a medic. That's what those Abilities you gain every level up deal with.

Very true, a Sniper with the right abilities is a lot more deadly than a Medic can ever hope to be. Always scoring criticals is a lot better than never having criticals scored on you. Offense is the best defense.
