Space Rangers 1 is okay - turn-based 2d, with other ships going about their business as usual. But, somehow lacks the spark to keep me stuck in...

Well, it's more space trading/exploration then strategy. SR2 do has strategy - Neither Earth inspired one, and rather fun too... if it is completely optional, if quests involving such battles usually give you nice amounts of cash.
But SR (both 1 & 2) has insane replayability and general gameplay. Let me mention that on Ag.ru review list it has highest average user mark ever - 96%!
I fear that text quests it has + extremely hilarious dialogues with pirates and general chit-chat may get lost in translation somewhat... but even having that in mind, SR (and especially SR2) are very fun and addicting.
