Space Rangers questions

So, I just got the U.S. version of Space Rangers 2. Which version of the Star Force removal tool do I need? Can I use the tool and still play the game?

By the way, my monitor crapped out about an hour or two after I installed the game. Weird coincidence.

I bought it around the US release, and if I removed Starforce after installation and cracked the EXE, it would still reinstall Starforce every time I booted it. The cracked EXE allowed me to play without putting my DVD in the drive, but that's it - copy protection defeated, but annoying hidden programs running on my machine. There might be a more completely cracked version out there by now, though.

I played SR2 to near completion, uninstalled it and then used the remover from the SF website to get rid of the Starforce junk dlls and registry entries, and I never had any problems.

Speaking of Space Rangers, I just stumbled upon both games the other day, Space Rangers 1 and 2, priced at 5$ each. I'll get SR2, should I get the first one as well?

Well, hm... I hope I'm not breaking any rules by saying this, but if you're having serious problems with starforce and also have a fast intarwebs connection... UK version. No starforce, crack, or anything. Can't remember who released it. Try finding it on mininova and torrentspy.

Has it's own text adventures, BUT, unless you have Russian version, MOST of them (and the langest and, daresay, most interesting ones of SR2) were cut out by translators.

Thanks all! I'll remember to remove the star force *after* I finish playing the game.

Are there any good strategy guides for this game? What I found at GameFAQs kind of sucks. One is too spoilery; the other feels like a mismatch of excerpts from discussion threads (which it is).

The best I found was a discussion thread someone linked to here. You'll probably find as much info in the old threads here as anyplace else.

I'll set up a guest XP system in VMWare before trying starforce cracks to make sure it works alright. If it screws the system, it will have done so to the guest.

Actually, I'm thinking about using a guest entirely also for all online activity.

I just started my first character--a human trader. I've completed the tutorial missions; what do I do now? I've read that there's a search feature that you can use to scope out the nearby stations to find profitable trade runs. How do I do that?

Is the news a reliable source of information on profitable trade destinations? How long do I have before a news source becomes outdated?

Do I have time to goof off at all while playing the game? Or, is the game like Star Control, where you pretty much have to stick to a fixed schedule? What I mean is, how much wiggle room do I have, time-wise?

The character you pick doesn't matter other than starting equimpment and relations. If you spend your time trading or fighting you'll be known as a merchant or fighter.

Been awhile since I played it so some of this might be wrong.

Right clicking on a planet when you're in the system will put all the trade prices in the info box at the bottom of the screen. Click on the "i" at the bottom of the screen.

Going to a bussiness station gives you the option to pay for a short range or long range report, basically buy here and sell here. Short range is usually in system. Long range requires a jump. Long range is risky since the AI may beat you there and drive the prices down.

Using the search feature on any station or planet and typing in "planet" will list the closest 20 planets and commodity prices.

If you ever stumble on the quest that asks you to de-code "tuu-hell hoo di-gou izza", know that the translater have screwed up and that there's no logic to the answer. I spent 1.5 hours and a lot of paper trying to de-code that one this evening...

Appart from that the game rocks. The text-adventures are especially fun, though they're more math-problems and logical thinking than "adventures".

What'd you think of the pizza contest? I found that one more random luck than anything. Get the wrong combo of judges and you just can't please them all.

Wow, that was a quick reply! Note, that I edited my previous post in the meantime to add a few extra questions...

Thanks!

Hmm, can't remember that I've participated in a pizza-contest. There was something about pizza, but as far as I remember I just transported it to earth; something about a mind controlling drug disguised as healthy pizza.

The other quest to avoid is the "elus" competition. The effort you'll probably have to expend (perfect deduction still can lead to random guessing) just isn't worth the standard text-adventure reward. Build ski lodges instead.

The AI seems to work off the same info you can get so it can get outdated pretty quick.

How much time you have to goof off depends on the starting galaxy generation and what you do. If you don't want to fight the dominators head on go to bussiness stations and spend your money on military bases and fleets. I noticed whenever I'd do something like fund a new base the AI's would build a few too. I assume they're in points competition. Regardless the effect is it allows the AI to hold the dominators in check giving you time to screw around.

@Mountains West There's a pizza contest adventure too. But like I said it seemed pretty random to me. Was wondering what others thought.

elus? Is that the one with the different colored and shaped(round, lozenge, small, etc..) pieces?

The ski lodge was easy and payed off nicely.
