A combat trick I used in Gothic was pressing left and right while swinging, making swings to the left and right sides quickly. Not very damaging, but criticals do alot still, so as you get higher in weapon skill and get a better weapon it makes it pretty easy (but then you've got a shitload of really tough guys right after that, like those damn ice golems and stuff)
