Can't stand Dragonlance

Even if you HATE Dragonlance, the Gold Box Dragonlance games are a fucking blast to play. <3 <3 And it is the only Gold Box game where you can play a Fighter/Mage AND cast spells in full Platemail. :D And thanks to the horrible text limitations of the engine, the story and writing are at a bare minimum, and at least tolerable.

First two Dragonlance games are great. Death Knights of Krynn is awesome. Lots of hidden side areas/encounters you might not find on every playthrough. Also Soth looks quite badass complete with his own theme!

Are any of these worth playing for anyone that won't get the special feels that come from reliving their lonely and sub-par childhood?
I never played any of the SSI games when I was a kid, but I bought one of the GOG.com packages when it was on sale a few months ago. I found Pool of Radiance to be fairly easy to get into, although I switched to the Unlimited Adventures remake version because the controls are a lot less frustrating (even though I like some of the art of the original better). Sorry purists.

If I were to recommend one title for a non-nostalgic player, it would definitely be Unlimited Adventures. It's very playable even today. Personally I'd wait for another sale.

Thanks. controls aren't really an issue for me, I enjoyed the original X-Com for the first time 4 years ago and despite the occasional miss-move it was fine. What matters to me is interesting mechanics and ambiance (X-Com delivered in spades). My problem with these old RPGs is that I always fear they'll become either a boring grind or a frustrating reloadfest. For some context, my first cRPG was Ishar II and I think that holds up OK but not great ( ambiance is still wonderful but combat is dumb).

When I say the controls are frustrating, what I mean specifically is that you have to press several buttons in a row in order to do things like swap items from one character to another or memorize spells. By the time Unlimited Adventures came out, they had streamlined all that interface stuff so it's a lot faster and less tedious. The controls in the original Pool of Radiance annoyed me; the controls in Unlimited Adventures don't annoy me.
