Since the release of the source code for the Ur-Quan Masters, there have been various projects coming and going related to it, like remixed music, new voice recordings, Super-melee balance mods and, inevitably, fan-made sequels/mods.

Last month one of these groups released a demo of their project, which strives to be a worthy sequel to Star Control 2. I was bored and gave it a go... and I couldn't believe how good a job they did. There's not much to do in the demo except visit some of the races from SC2 and chat with them, but there's a new race in there to be found and fought with.

What hit me the most about this project is how faithful they are to Star Control 2, both in relations to old content and new. I cruised through the demo in a single evening, but I had more fun in that single evening than I've had in a long time playing video games.

The announcement from the team is quoted below.

Team 6014 on the Star Control Discussion Board said:
Hi all

The team is quite excited to announce the release of the Project6014 demo.

You can find content packages and executables for OSX, Windows and Linux at our project page here:
http://code.google.com/p/project6014/wi ... =Downloads

We’re very keen to get some decent feedback on various bugs and whatnot you may encounter as well as general response.

We wanted to keep to our promise of releasing by 30 September. Unfortunately there are one or two things that we ran out of time to tidy up or insert but we plan to release a patch in a few weeks time to rectify this.

Regardless, it should be perfectly playable. But do remember, as a demo it is extremely light on content. Its purpose is to demonstrate what we are capable of, generate some excitement, and hopefully attract some other talented people in the community to help out.

In the mean time, I hope you enjoy it.

- Cedric on behalf of the Project6014 team.

P.S. we tried to think of a better working title but unfortunately the leading candidate also happened to be the same name as a prominent porn star (well, prominent on Google anyway).

Must-see points in the demo:

# Ask Commander Hayes about the Zoq-Fot-Pik.
# Visit Betelgeuse.
# Visit Unzervalt in the Vela system. (Remember to ask first, shoot xenos later)

Hope you enjoy it.

Just a *bump* to point out that there's a slightly updated version of the demo out now. Some errors fixed, some new things to see and do.

Why do I always seem to forget how fucking awesome Star Control 2 is? It easily deserves to be on my "Top 10 Motherfucking Games of all Time" list but somehow I usually overlook it.

:x at myself.

Insert clever insult here
But goddamn the mineral harvesting in the beginning. It always gets me. And the old "sell-lander-forever" glitch isn't possible in Ur-Quan masters anymore so I'm fucked.

An "easy" solution to that is to use the various resource guides available to look up the best systems to mine in. For example, the Tauri constellation (Beta, Delta and Gamma Tauri to be more precise) is loaded with valuable minerals. Just watch out for the local inhabitants. Beta and Zeta Vulpeculae (Orz space) are also rich systems, and more *friendly* too. :) Alpha Centauri and Zeeman are also loaded, but your shuttle will melt faster than a snowball in hell in those systems.

If you want biodata, try the Sextantis constellation in Vux space.

One "plus" about Project 6014 is that you can't mine. You're given a RU amount and short of selling donated ships and blowing up hostile ships that's all you've got. It should be good enough for you anyway.

*bump*

A year has passed... and the Project 6014 team has released an updated demo.

The biggest change are the new hi-res graphics, but there's also some new content for people to discover.

I'm gonna go play it now, so I'll just leave the download link here:

http://code.google.com/p/project6014/wi ... loads?tm=2

EDIT: The download for the new demo is currently surpassing 500MB, so keep that in mind...
