I wish there was an RPG where poorly equipped robbers just wouldn't attack you if you had good enough gear, and just nervously went like "Uuuh.. What's up?" if you tried talking to them.

Not quite the same, but I know people talked to you differently once you got Power Armor in the original Fallout games. People like the Casino guards who used to call you a punk bitch suddenly got real respectful and/or nervous around you. Prostitutes wondered if it was a new form of condom, said they'd be jacking their prices up or wanted to know if they needed a wrench. Can't remember if any combat encounters were averted due to the world now considering you a walking tank.

It was pretty funny how some NPCs were confused regarding your gender when you wore power armor as well. I don't remember the exact line, but something like "Sir.. uh.. madam?"

I was mostly thinking of open world games where you actually see the enemy come running towards you, though, because that's where you really notice how stupid they most be. Like in New Vegas, where some strung out Raider with a baseball bat probably will attack you regardless of your appearance or if you're accompanied by a robot dog and a super mutant or not.

To be fair, that Raider would have likely heard about events in FO3's DLC, where Slavers with pieces of fucking pipe could knock you out in cut-scenes. Despite your character probably running around in Combat, Tesla or Powered Armor and being of an extremely high level.

So they can always hope the power of railroaded plot comes to their rescue in a clinch.

Railroaded plot? The player can also knock power-armored people with a few well-placed swings of a nailed board. It's one of the effects of RADIATION - steel is much softer than in our reality. This is why the expansion is called "Broken Steel".

As you can see, flesh is also much more malleable in their world.

It's a small thing to barf about but still
As usual he's sellin air

So exactly NOTHING has been changed then!
All of this also was in the previous games... only in a more derp like form...
And now they want to take credit, not for making something work good/realistic/rewarding...
But for how it should have been in the first place, 2, arguably 3 games earlier...
What a learning curve it must be.

Not buying, Todd!

Take credit? He was asked how the loot system worked and he explained it. When did he make it a sales pitch?

I've seen this reasoning before and it might even be true if games could do that. But they cant. I mean, look at combat alone, I am yet to see a a sword/shield game with a decent real-time combat system. It's always just hold block button, wait to get hit, use the opponents recoil to land 2 blows, repeat. The best I've seen is, sadly, Mount and Blade. So yeah, stick to stats and skill please.

It's never about whether "computers can do it", son. It's a fucking RP of G we are talking about here. Fucking RP of G. Stats aren't a substitute for "THEM EVIL TECH-NO-LOGICAL LEE-ME-TATIONS!!" I don't give a shit about this bullshit nextgen talk and you shouldn't either!

I've yet to see a 'modern' RPG where the opponents flee when they're low on health...

Then you don't play many games. It's been around for a long time. In Assassin's Creed series, for instance, they flee even without losing health. If a 4+ group attacks you, the last few guys often stop attacking beg and for mercy or flee to get support or just flee the fuck out of your sight. And that's a fairly popular console game, not even an RPG.

So assuming that we now have the technology to do away with statistics, we should? Haven't you two realised by now that statistics as an abstraction is important for reasons of actual role-playing? That without the statistics you basically are your character? Seriously, guys. Are you trolling?

:retarded:

Yes, we should. If it was ever possible to show character development separately from player-skill development without the use of statistics. Which it isn't. And wont be in any foreseeable future.

And the reason is bad design + technological limitations?

lol who the fuck is this guy?

You are quite the retard, eh? Statistics are a necessary abstraction to divorce the player from the game while allowing the player to tailor the character precisely to his/her specification. Remove statistics and the player and character become one, forcing the strengths and weaknesses of the player on the character he/she wishes to role-play. Hide statistics and rely on visual cues and the game becomes a guessing game rather than a role-playing game.

This is the fucking Codex, man! Wise up or get the fuck out.

I think you have misunderstood what I am saying. We both ultimately want the same thing. Stat based RPG's. I'm just saying if the technology were present (it's not, seriously this shit would require like brain alterations and all kinds of ludicrous imaginings) it would be possible to do what many developers claim they are doing by removing (or simplifying) traditional RPG stats. But it's not, and wont be.

Ah, you mean that if technology was advanced enough, we could be able to make our character faster or stronger naturally, instead of leveling the "hit faster / stronger" stats and pretending the character is faster / stronger? :) Yeah, I kind of get what you're sa-
