Yeah, that money-smart management style also tends to lead to making games more accessible, streamlined, dumbed down. It's a difficult industry to float in, and that's just one of the most direct ways to try to survive.
On the other hand...is exploring various business models really that bad, in the grand scheme of things? inXile put out Choplifter HD, Bard's Tale, friggin' Line Rider, and fully own and sell the,. I mean, I have no huge interest in any of those games compared to my interest in Wasteland 2, but they do put the company in a better situation financially. Diversification tends to be a good thing, including in genres outside RPGs. Or do you disagree?
