The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante, a gamebook-like "narrative-driven RPG set in a gritty world where a person's Lot is determined at birth, while the gods are real and preside over the fates of men"

So, this obscure Russian RPG/Visual novel with pretty original dark fantasy setting (think of Pathologic or Inquisitor) is now translated into English and free demo is available until September 20. I've backed this project, played demo already in Spring and I kinda liked it.

A narrative-driven RPG set in a gritty world where a person's Lot is determined at birth, while the gods are real and preside over the fates of men. Set out on a lifelong journey and carve out your own destiny.

I always loved CYOA-style character creation like Darklands and Megatraveller did, but when will they show the actual game?

I'm guessing that there aren't any fan translations to play in the meanwhile?

What do you mean, comrade?
The demo only allows you to play through the first two chapters (a.i. childhood and adolescence).

I think my backer version included just these, so no, don't think there is more for now.
Ah, gotcha. Misunderstood your earlier post ITT and thought that the Russian version had already been fully released and that the Steam game represented an English version now in development.

The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante: Finish the Story contest!
Dive deeper into the game's narrative - check exclusive snippet of Sir Brante’s biography
Hail to your grace, Miladies and Milords! We invite you to join the fun and participate in the very first The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante "Finish the Story" Contest.

"What is all of this about?" you might ask.

The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante is a narrative-driven RPG and those of you who played the free prologue should already know that every action chosen by the player has the power to greatly affect the protagonist as well as future in-game events.

We would like to offer a chance to dive even deeper into the game's narrative and grant you the power to rewrite it as you see fit!

Here is how it works:

We share an exclusive snippet of Sir Brante’s biography and give you two options for possible actions to pick from. You can then leave a comment specifying the path you would choose in-game and, as soon as we get at least 15 REPLIES, we’ll make a new post, describing the consequences based on the choice made by the majority of respondents!
And now... let’s take a look at today’s story, shall we?

The Story

You are six. Your mother needs to pay a quick visit to the neighbor and she asks you to look after Nathan while she is gone. Being only three, your little brother is a whining crybaby and can be quite the nuisance. However, if you manage to distract him with something, he just might keep quiet and leave you alone. After a short search, you find a tin can full of grain that makes a loud rattling sound when shaken which Nathan seems to adore.

Your conscience thus cleared, you climb into an armchair with a heavy tome in hand and dive headlong into the book's narrative that chronicles the great military campaigns of old, complete with battle schemes and pictures of warriors belonging to various Arknian clans…

Two chapters in, you notice that something is amiss. Managing to unglue yourself from the text, you realize that the room is suspiciously still and that Nathan is nowhere to be seen.

He is not in the parlor, nor in the dining room or in any of the hallways. Your parents' servants simply shrug your questions off.

All of a sudden, you hear your mother’s voice - she has returned home early! At the very same moment, you notice that the backdoor was left slightly ajar. Realizing that Nathan could have snuck out into the backyard, you pause to wonder... What if he is not there? Would it be better to come clean and tell mother everything?

What should the young Sir Brante do?

1. Check the backyard first. Perhaps Nathan really is there?

2. Confess to his mother that he failed to keep an eye on his little brother.

Hello, Honorable Steamers!

A few weeks ago we launched the “Finish the Story" contest where we shared a short snippet of Sir Brante’s biography with you, providing two options of possible actions to choose from.

The majority of respondents voted to “check the backyard first,” so let’s find out what happened next!

You swore to take care of your younger brother and simply can’t let him down!

Unnoticed, you slip out of the room. Quickly glancing over the courtyard you notice a high fence, a flowerbed, and an old tree leaning towards the wall of the mansion. Ah, and there’s Nathan - you notice his tiny figure on the roof at the far wing of the building. Covered in a cold sweat, your younger brother is holding onto the roof tiles, staring into the sky above. How did he even manage to get up there?

There’s no time to waste - you wave at him and rush to the rescue. You manage to climb up onto the roof with the help of an old free-standing ladder, tearing a sleeve of your new shirt in the process.

You reach out to Nathan, but he just throws you a glance full of dread. You will have to scoop him up yourself. With your help, the younger boy awkwardly climbs down the ladder, all the while clasping the tin can to his chest. When there are only a couple of steps left to the ground, Nathan suddenly stumbles, forcing both of you to fall onto the soft grass.

Before you know it, your mother’s silhouette rises above you. She takes Nathan in her arms, leaving you to get up by yourself as you vainly try to hide the torn sleeve of your shirt from sight.

Mother’s voice sounds cold and quiet.

- I’m going to have to punish you for this, son.

You try to explain that you only momentarily lost sight of Nathan and went after him as soon as you realized he was gone, doing everything possible to rescue your brother!

Your mother lets out a sigh of sorrow that you can’t quite understand:

- My boy, the only path is to accept your guilt and face due punishment. It’s impossible to change one’s past actions and there is no other way to redeem oneself.

She makes you stay in the dark storage room for the rest of the evening. You know that you will never be able to forget how you were punished for rescuing your poor brother until the day you die.

Hope you enjoyed it and don't forget to wishlist The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante on Steam - the release date will be announced soon!

The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante progress update
Here's what we’re working on at the moment and what awaits you in the future!

Hello, everybody! Sever Studio’s here with the upcoming narrative-driven RPG The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante. We haven’t shared any game updates in a while, but rest assured — the development process is moving along at full speed. In this article, we’d like to give you a progress update specifically in regards to what we’re working on at the moment and what awaits you in the future.

Let’s dive in, shall we?

e265898a8c35a24e2cf956ae39752121904ed900.gif

Our team is currently busy testing the game logic and complex relations between various in-game events. The plotline of The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante isn’t linear — there are 3 distinct endings with an equal number of major interconnected routes the player can take.

Writing a story like that isn’t easy: just one possible path towards an ending consists of 206 (!) in-game scenes and plot twists. These include different outcomes of historical events, various states of internal affairs in the Empire (especially in the last chapter of the game), variations in the protagonist’s as well as his family members’ social status, secondary characters’ development, and so on and so forth.

Check out the mind map for just ONE game ending below:

The most important task here is to identify and resolve any possible contradictions that might arise should two distinct story branches collide. And trust us — it takes a lot of hard work to polish up a tale of such epic proportions!

Other than that, we can proudly state that most of the game’s content has already been finalized: with all storyline events written down and the corresponding illustrations fully drawn, the game’s development is nearing completion. At the moment, we’re brushing up minor errors, fixing bugs, optimizing the game for common (and not so common) screen resolutions, while also testing and working on The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante English localization.

dacddc12740a3a83739c80e0e0da72030d3cec28.gif

Let us stop here for now and elaborate a bit on the localization process. The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante is twice the size of the “Hobbit” novel by J.R.R. Tolkien and boasts more than 200K words.
As you can imagine, it’s an ENORMOUS amount of content in need of translation and editing. Therefore, we kindly ask everyone who’s waiting for the game to remain patient as we aim to release a fully functional and debugged product and won’t settle for anything less.

Thank you once again for your immense support! Don’t forget to wishlist The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante on Steam and follow the latest news on Twitter or Discord!
