In retrospect, it's amazing that Valve never made a survival shooter of their own.

Apparently Valve has been working (or worked) on something like that for CS:GO, at least from 2016:

https://www.vg247.com/2017/12/18/cs...-lot-like-playerunknowns-battlegrounds-to-us/

Either Counter-strike: Global Offensive is getting a PUBG mode or Valve is randomly filling its game with useless files. Could go either way, hey.

The CS:GO community is buzzing over a hot rumour that a Battle Royale mode – in other words, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – is inbound.

Valve News Network has once again put the developer under the magnifying glass and woven a theory from a number of threads spotted in CS:GO patches dating back to May 2016. That’s before PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was even announced, but of course the formula was already proven thanks to PlayerUnknown’s original DayZ: Battle Royale mod and his later work on H1Z1’s King of the Kill mode.

The patches discussed in the video reference all sorts of content and features not yet found in CS:GO, such as compound bows, unarmed combat, light and heavy armour, supply crates, parachutes, drones, breach charges, adrenaline shots, sonar, beacons, new grenades, night vision goggles, an as yet unreleased island map, and loads of references to “survival”.

So is CS:GO actually getting a PUBG mode? Who knows. Sleuths are always finding references to Left 4 Dead 3 and Half-life 3 in various Valve materials, and nothing has ever come of them. This may be the result of the company’s unusual structure and tendency to start and then move on from all sorts of projects all the time – although recently we have wondered if Valve is also trolling a little.

In any case, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Valve jump on the PUBG formula; it has a history of elevating popular mods into full games, as with Dota, Team Fortress and indeed Counter-strike itself. The video’s argument regarding the Chinese market is compelling, too.

But you know, Valve has all the time in the world.

It's for the best. Сhinese are like locust. I pray Tencent will remove PUBG from Steam and launch their own servers.

Launching on the day of the steam winter sale when will developers learn, if pubg wasn't such a huge phenomenon in asia and russia that would probably hamper sales.

Steam Awards 2017 Nominees: http://store.steampowered.com/news/35437/

D:OS 2 nominated for The Choices Matter Award.

Announcing the Steam Awards 2017 Nominees

The Steam Selection Committee has spoken again for the 2017 Steam Awards Nominees. Come back every day from December 21st to January 2nd to vote for each award, and find out the winners on January 3rd!

BannerImage_ExternalUse.jpg

December 21st 10 AM PST
The “Choices Matter” Award - Games are about agency, and this award is for the game that has it in spades. Maybe it’s because there are 31 ways you can breach into a villains lair. Perhaps there are dozens of potential partners for you to build a romantic future with. Or maybe you find yourself constantly saying “Where oh where should I plant those turnips”? In all three scenarios there is a common bond: the choice was always yours.

-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
-Divinity: Original Sin 2
-Life is Strange: Before the Storm
-The Walking Dead: A New Frontier
-Dishonored 2

December 22nd 10 AM PST
The “Mom's Spaghetti” Award - There are games that make you excited. There are games that make you happy. Then there are games so intense that they elicit a physical reaction. We’re talking weak knees. We’re talking sweaty palms. We’re talking fear-induced accidents. We’re talking your friends reminding you to breathe. We’re talking about mom’s spaghetti.

-PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
-Outlast 2
-RESIDENT EVIL 7
-The Evil Within 2
-Alien: Isolation

December 23rd 10 AM PST
The “Labor of Love” AwardThis game has been out for a while. The team is well past the first unveiling of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years.

-Team Fortress 2
-Warframe
-Titan Quest Anniversary Edition
-Path of Exile
-Crusader Kings II

December 24th 10 AM PST
The “Suspension of Disbelief" AwardLet’s be honest: games can have some pretty ridiculous elements in them… from the stories that drive the action, to the items required to conquer obstacles, to even the protagonists themselves. This award is for the game that has a key component, which when described out of context, seems totally insane, but while playing the game doesn’t even make you bat an eye, because in the moment it makes total sense.

-Saints Row IV
-Goat Simulator
-South Park the Fractured But Whole
-Rocket League
-Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

December 25th 10 AM PST
The “The World Is Grim Enough Let's Just All Get Along” AwardGames delight and entertain us, giving us much needed breaks from the sorrows and low points of our lives… and let’s be honest, for a lot of people it’s been a rough 2017. That is why the SASC has chosen to celebrate a game that doesn’t involve combat or conflict.

-Stardew Valley
-Cities: Skylines
-Slime Rancher
-ABZU
-To the Moon

December 26th 10 AM PST
The “No Apologies” AwardThis award is for the game that you love unconditionally. Does it have some faults? Maybe. Do other people not understand your love for it? Sure. But make no mistake. There is no guilt here. Only pleasure.

-Rust
-Mount & Blade: Warband
-HuniePop
-Gothic II: Gold Edition
-The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (The Witcher 1)

December 27th 10 AM PST
The “Defies Description” Award - This game is like... well actually it's more similar to...picture a combination of... ya know what, I can't describe it, just play it.

-Garry's Mod
-The Stanley Parable
-Pony Island
-Antichamber
-Doki Doki Literature Club

December 28th 10 AM PST
The “Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs of War” Award - The Bard said it best. This game doesn't necessarily offer the biggest explosions... it offers something better. Potential. Potential to be a rampaging force of nature. Or not. Who knows. You're an agent of chaos and no one is going to tell you what to do.

-Just Cause 3
-Total War: Warhammer II
-Broforce
-Red Faction: Guerilla Steam Edition
-Middle-earth: Shadow of War

December 29th 10 AM PST
The “Haunts My Dreams” AwardThis award is slightly a misnomer, because this game doesn’t just haunt your dreams. It consumes your thoughts every waking moment of the day. This game doesn’t demand your time. You give it willingly.

-Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
-Dota 2
-Dark Souls III
-Factorio
-Sid Meier's Civilization VI

December 30th 10 AM PST
The “Soul of Vitruvius” Award - The Vitruvian Man was Leonardo’s celebration of the ideal form. And in that spirit the SASC looks to celebrate the game with the most lovingly rendered character… be it human, alien, anthropomorphic cat people, or even a piece of produce.

-NieR: Automata
-Rise of the Tomb Raider
-Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
-I am Bread
-Bayonetta

December 31st 10 AM PST
The “Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude! 2.0” Award - The Academy wasn't clear enough in the awards description last year. Let's try this again. This award is for the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" of video games.

-Hotline Miami
-Luna
-Antichamber
-CPU Invaders
-The Evil Within 2

January 1st 10 AM PST
The “Best Soundtrack” Award - There are very few things that can enhance a game better than music. The right song can set the tone for every aspect of gameplay, from simple exploration, to climatic boss fights. This award is for the soundtrack that captured the essence of their game so perfectly that it effortlessly immersed players into the game world.

-Nier: Automata
-Crypt of the Necrodancer
-Undertale
-Cuphead
-Transistor

January 2nd 10 AM PST
The “Even Better Than I Expected” Award - We’ve all been there. You get super excited for a game, you pre-order it, and you anxiously wait as it downloads. Then you finally play it. How do you feel now? If the answer is “Elated beyond words because even I, a conductor aboard the hype train, was blown away with how good this thing was” then you have found the perfect candidate for this award.

-Assassin's Creed Origins
-Cuphead
-Call of Duty: WWII
-Hollow Knight
-Sonic Mania

Some odd finalists in there Huniepop and Doki Doki Literature Club. Also why wouldn't people understand a gamer's love of Warband, Gothic 2, or Witcher 1?

Steam's Best of 2017 lists: http://steamcommunity.com/games/593110/announcements/detail/1593577406770252789

http://store.steampowered.com/best_of_2017

Note that Top New Releases is not a tiered list like others but "notable" sellers each month:

Ultimately, we weren’t happy with any single metric as determination of the popular releases throughout the year, so we used the games from all of these lists and split them out by the month they released. The result is a list of games released each month during 2017 that achieved a sizable level of commercial success. Top games released in January are based more on their overall gross revenue while games released later in the year are selected more based on initial week sales and average daily revenue.

I.e. don't be surprised to see TToN on the top of the list.

Steam “Best of 2017” Lists, A Look Back At 2017

This year we’re taking a look back at the best-performing games with five new “Best of 2017” lists.

Last year’s Top-Sellers list proved to be quite popular, so we wanted to update that list and expand on it by highlighting the variety of ways games achieved success on Steam in 2017.

Top Sellers
We started by looking at the top-sellers again. We ran the numbers to come up with the list of the games that earned the most revenue during 2017, including all forms of Steam revenue; game sales, in-game transactions, and DLC. So, like last year, the resulting list includes a mix of free-to-play games as well as premium games.

Without further ado, here are the Top Selling Games of 2017

Top New Releases
We thought that it might also be interesting to look at the top-selling games that released during 2017. This one was a bit trickier to put together in a way that fairly represented games released throughout the year. For example, if we just looked at total revenue earned by games released during the year, the list would strongly favor games released early in the year, as they have had more months to earn sales. To counter that effect, we could look at the average money-per-day earned by games released in 2017, but that ends up biasing strongly in favor of games released late in the year, as initial launch-week sales spikes are typically much stronger than following weeks and months.

Here are the Top Selling New Releases of 2017

(Note: any of the measures above for new releases will under-count free-to-play games, which tend to grow in revenue over time rather than having an initial sales spike like premium games.)

Best Selling VR Titles
We have seen over 1,000 new VR titles come out this year, including blockbusters such as Fallout 4 VR, SUPERHOT VR, and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality, as well as continued popularity of last year’s releases like Arizona Sunshine, RAW DATA, and Job Simulator. As VR continues to grow as a platform unto itself, we wanted to put together a list of this year’s top-selling VR games to highlight the variety of interesting VR experiences that are being bought and played.

Here are the Top Selling VR Experiences of 2017

Top Early Access Grads
The number of notable titles launching through the Early Access program continued to expand in 2017 with titles like PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS, Oxygen Not Included, Northgard, Dead Cells, and Blackwake. Meanwhile, we’ve seen a number of hugely popular Early Access games make the transition to full release (hello, PUBG!). So, we decided to make a list of all the top-selling games that graduated from Early Access this year.

Here are the Top Early Access Graduates of 2017

Top Played Games
Finally, we wanted to see what people were spending time playing, and how that compared with the games that players were spending money on. So we put together a list of games based on the peak number of simultaneous players. We originally set out to create a top-100 list, but found a slightly longer list (107) that achieved a peak number of simultaneous players over 15,000 and felt it was worth recognizing them all. To fully recognize the games that have built a significant player base, we’ve excluded a few titles that only had short-term spikes in player count due to running giveaways.

In the process of putting this list together, we found that there is a lot of overlap in the lists of top-selling games and top-played games, with 71 titles on both lists.

Here are the Most Played Games of 2017

About the Lists
Specific revenue for the lists are not disclosed, but the leading sellers are broken into the following four categories to give an idea of how they placed:
- Platinum: The first thru 12th best seller
- Gold: 13th - 24th best seller
- Silver: 25th - 40th top seller
- Bronze: 41st - 100th top seller

Also, don’t forget that later this week, the winners of the second annual Steam Awards will be revealed. You have a couple more days to vote on the last categories, and to be part of history! http://store.steampowered.com/SteamAwards/

Wait, why TToN is in the January list? It's Early Access release was January of 2016, and official release was February this year. And why D:OS 2 isn't in the September list?

The gross revenue lists are very interesting since they are much more meaningful than # of sales, which gives no indication whether people are buying a game they really want at full price or picking it up randomly at a $15 sale. I'd have thought DOS2 would still be too niche to make it the big leagues. OTOH the fact that Fallout 4 still is at the gold level is very depressing.

Also holy shit, Wolfenstein must have bombed hard. All the way down in the league of slow burn indie games and discounted to $5 stuff from years past. Meaning that something like 2-5x as many people bought L4D2 this year as bought Wolfenstein 2. Crazy.

Catbots, if you're not familiar with the term, are player-created bots that flood TF2 servers, lining up headshots on everything in sight. They're all called things like 'catbot 1574', and they're a nuisance. But in an attempt to stamp them out, some players are claiming that Valve has crossed a line. Anybody with 'catbot' in their Linux username (yes, not their Steam username), will now find themselves with an automatic VAC ban, regardless of whether they've actually booted up TF2 or not.

Now, I don't know how many Linux users have 'catbot' in their username, but there is at least the potential for friendly fire here. On the GitHub thread where the issue was uncovered, one user said that their Steam account was VAC-banned despite claiming to never have cheated. Another said: "I installed Ubuntu on a virtual machine and named the computer catbot-918 and installed Steam, within an hour of not playing anything I received a VAC ban."

A GitHub moderator for Valve confirmed that the policy was in fact a deliberate attempt to combat bots, adding that it was "not open for discussion on Github" (which, on my reading, doesn't mean that the issue is not open for discussion at all, just not on GitHub).

I am proud of this VAC ban
, because before me, Valve manually VAC banned only a few people, like golden wrench dudes (drunkenf00l for example, who now works at Valve). And I am completely sure that this was a manual VAC ban.

  • All accounts used on my PC recently got VAC banned in TF2, even accounts without TF2 or any games in library, without family sharing or shared phone number, not even a confirmed e-mail.

  • Steam now blacklists link to my personal website and to my github account (github is a website for software developers for publishing and version control of open source software), these are now {LINK REMOVED}'s.

  • One of my banned accounts has a phone number connected to other accounts, which are not banned because I didn't use them for a long time (I've made several accounts long ago and bound them to same phone #, one of them got VACced (manually) and others didn't get a ban. With normal VAC bans, every account on that phone number would be VAC banned)

  • The cheat that I've made (and the bots used it) is still not VAC bannable.

  • I obviously didn't cheat on main account, nor did I cheat on accounts where I didn't even launch TF2 once.

  • Most of these (except for Valve manually blacklisting my name from URL's) are a sign of hardware ban, and hardware bans are never made by VAC automatically. And this is my first VAC ban ever.

  • I also didn't get an "Account alert" on my main accounts (you get a yellow account alert when you get VAC banned and you can't get rid of it until you read it and tick a checkbox). I got account alerts for my bots though.

You have no idea what kind of crazy shitty stories people come up with just to explain their VAC ban before asking to remove it.
