I'd like to say that BaK has very good graphics for its time and -excellent- sound; you must have not had the joy of growing up with these games.

And awesome wigs. Don't forget the wigs.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Ahaaha Mareus, true, but did they use polygons? A 3-D engine? [Though it's only a mock-one]? No! Indeed, I find that this game looks very incredible. But maybe we appreciate graphics differently. As an example, graphics that I can't tolerate are Ultima 6 and below; Wizardry 1-8 are fine though with me. It's really odd.

My favourite graphics have to be 320x240 games. With such big pixels, they had to work hard to on drawing good sprites and nice art-design. And boy, they did! Amiga games still look vastly superior of course.

Yes. In my opinion, Monkey Island 2 has the best graphics ever [together with some other adventures of that time, like King's Quest 6]. Damn, I really miss those old pixelated graphics... maybe because back then, when the actual graphic effects were poor, the developers had to put a lot of effort in making it look good by making beautiful art designs instead of just focusing on bloom and other shitty effects...

I don't mind BaK graphics and the sounds are superb (especially the music).

BaK has some of the most memorable music from any game ever. What an amazing game. It's a crime this game isn't in people's top lists like PS:T is.

I don't know if I'd rather have you say you never played FO, or that you have. . .

You know, for all the complaining people here do about Final Fantasy games it wasn't until the first PS2 one (Final Fantasy 10) that the games had any voice acting at all. Everyone that played the hated/beloved FF7 had to read everything.

I grew up plying PC RPGs and JRPGs (I know I lose cool points, but whatever). I really enjoyed them through the end of the PS, but once voice acting became the norm, I lost interest. One of the big problems with JRPGs is the characters are officially much younger than they actually seem in the game. With the introduction of voice actors, you can't ignore the official ages, so you are actually stuck with a 17 year old saving the world. That was kind of the killer for these types of games for me. On the other hand, Kingdom Hearts has a movie quality cast, and the voice acting adds a ton to the game. I guess where I really stand is I only want voice acting if it 1) takes NOTHING from other areas and 2) is done much better than most games handle it.

Almost all voice actors are adults though. Even though Jaster in Rogue Galaxy is supposed to be 18 or 17 or something he's played by Will Freidle. The guy who played Eric Mathews on Boy Meets World. He's not a kid anymore... The only actual kid VA I know of for a video game main character is in Kingdom Hearts.

I guess what I mean is, I'm not sure how voice actors make it harder for you to ignore a character's supposed age.

I agree that I prefer voice acting as an enhancement rather than a trade off, but in that respect JRPGs still beat western ones since they almost all still use a mixture of voiced dialogue for important parts and text for less important stuff.

I just meant that FO belongs in pretty much any top 3 list. I'm glad you're enjoying BaK. Its incredible. One of the best games ever.

Shoelip - Even though they're adults, they're generally doing voices as if they're younger. Tidus is a case in point. I'd rather not have the voices, have the old sprites that were more age ambiguous, and pretend its adults doing everything in the game. I mean, they tend to be adults anyway who just have the number 17 or 18 tacked on to make it accessible to the target audience.

As much as a I love BaK, the graphics were really painful when you were outdoors. The green grass and mountains blurred into one.

Ohh crap - I don't worship any pope, didn't steal anything in my whole life (yes that includes music and computer games) and don't eat cabbage...

What should I do now? Emigrate? Kill myself? Decisions, decisions...

I don't believe VO forces devs to cut dialog. It's lies created by PR department.

Cut dialogue? No. Limit re-writes? Yes. If you want to release a game in multiple languages at the same time (which you do because otherwise people will pirate it - though they'll do that anyway), you have to send the text to translators - early, usually 6-12 months prior to ship. So the game isn't even done yet and the text has been locked down for translation. Then you revise plots or realize that certain things play differently and want to change the text (because no one gets it perfect) - but now you can't. Or you can try to re-record some of the VO based on minimal re-writes - at even greater cost. Yay VO! *shake fist* I like VO but it does cause issues. Personally, I'd rather a game with polished text and some VO than non-polished text with all VO.
