Evowok Breeder : inspired by Pokemon but much harder, with some more RPG systems and WTF edgy narrative and open quests inspired by Fallout. It's also a very long game. One of my favourite games of recent years.

Demon : smt x roguelike, with interesting demon management mechanisms.

Hollow : inspired by Laplace No Ma, the guy is currently working on a Cyberpunk take on Wizardry 8 btw.

CastlevaniaRL is simple but I like to play it from time to time.

INFESTED : a sci-fi game in the vein of the MacVentures. The good news is that they're currently working on an Arabian Nights game which they announced a while ago but at the time they were all busy working on various other things.

Not sure if it's directly inspired by anything, but Cosmodog is a fun turn-based exploration game.

The freeware version of SturmFront - The Mutant War is cool, an enhanced version is available which I'm going to buy at some point.

Willy World is your average plateformer, I know there are probably one million like this one but I played it so...

damn some nice picks in there. Willy World seems like an homage to Alex Kidd btw, at least judging from that screenshot anyway. Here's another very well-known fan-made game, this time it's a remake someone made of metroid 2 (which is a game boy game):

btw i actually played thru Infested last year. It was fun. found out about it via supergreatfriend youtube channel (not to be confused the unbelievably faggy SuperBestFriends who are cancerous morons).

This game in particular was very fun for some reason.

This was a more common topic before the indie boom. I remember distinctly going through many a message board and news site to find more freeware indies.

So for starters let's get some of the biggest and brightest.

Just now found this while youtubeing random sonic content (i get a kick out of watching autists sperg over the cringe-inducing story lines in modern sonic games, it's quite entertaining watching break that shit down as if it was something important); anyway, stumbled across this cool fan-remake of sonic 2 in HD sprites:

frankly it may be one of the few "HD sprite" games that looks legitimately HD and not like cheap flash animations. This looks really nice. this HD remake project was founded by the guy who went on to do Sonic Mania and Freedom Planet; he's no longer busy with this as he has actual commercial games to work on now but some peeps are still plugging along with this and so far the downloadable demo has the first 3 zones done.

AM2R - Another Metroid 2 Remake - Superior in everyway to that horrible, godforsaken 3DS remake. Took a dedicated fan to release another classic 2D Metroid game since Nintendo obviously doesn't give a fuck besides filling takedown requests.

Hero Core - Reminded me a lot of the original Metroid II (GB), except you fight machines.

Streets of Rage Remake - Love letter for classic 2D beat'n'up fans. It was originally hosted at SOR Online but it seems the domain is gone.

(it's really good)

(No it's not)

(I mean, impressive amount of work, but for the standards of Wolf clones in the Doom engine BoA is more like.... a very weird mix of RTCW "athmosphere" with very messy level and enemy design. The only level I really enjoyed was the secret mutant base, and it's still a mess)

(Impressive amount of work nonetheless, tho)

Ok, I may have oversold it, but I still give it a recommendation.

Give it a try. It's free!
