Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Bubbles In Memoria
I love both, but one thing that I really like about modern warfare is that it plays very differently from medieval and fantasy warfare (there are almost no grand tactical game that does medieval warfare convincingly. Field of Glory somewhat does, but it has no sieges, and only covers early middle age atm. I suppose Pike and Shot: Japanese Edition also counts, but it is not the same middle age).
Pike & Shot had scenarios with fortifications and at least one outright siege defense.
Also some user made scenarios that were about medieval conflicts.

Back to OP's 1st post.

I think, not sure, that exit from the belly of a transport aircraft into the face of heavy alien fire is the tradition of XCOM/UFO genre. UFO ET caterred to that often-loudly-voiced demand from the fans, I think.

UFO ET problem is that they have the troops landed INSIDE a vehicle, which is immersion breaking. Everybody knows pilots hated to drop in hot LZ.

Other games dont have THAT problem because they can have troop, each unit, deployed in a selectable zone. So they avoid that criticism, even if, yes, the troops met heavy fire right from turn 1.

UFO ET-specific tactic to deal with this is heaviest armored troopers stand at the outside, ready to jump out and take one for the team. Some even have robot and APC stand at that position, as disposable bullet-sponge.

The other tactic is use fastest with best reaction speed scouts on the outside to recognize threats. Scout jump out, run to 2/3 of their AP, then withdraw back in with the rest of AP. That way they have cleared a bit of fog of war, and trigger ambush fire first. This is useful on scouting battlefield too, not just exiting transport.
