The drought of RPGs has pushed me onto playing PS2 JRPGS, so I've kinda lost track of what good turn-based strategy games are available on the PC.

I was a great fan of Age of Wonders. Anything else out there like this?

Not a big fan of RTS...

Disciples II
Master of Magic

Warlords Battlecry

And don't forget the HOMM V open beta on Monday.

edit: Yeah, so none of those were released in the last year.

Sorta of an underdog but I like Slitherine's games.

Legion/Legion Gold I didn't care much for. Chariots of War and Spartan/Gates of Troy are good. Try the demo's and see what you think.

If you like the Civ and AOM style you might try the oldie Masters of Magic. Probably need DOSBox to get it running though. There's also FreeCiv and CivEvo.

King of Dragon Pass, unique strategy game. Lot of people compare it to the choose your own adventure books. Check Underdogs for a review.

Another not as oldie, Lords of Magic. Underdogs still has it.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. Probably the best TBS game ever.

Hate to say this, but I've played the complete series! I might have another go at AoW:SM if I can find it on eBay.

Anything else released in the last year?
Can't think of anything released so recently.

That said, have you played any of the AoW:SM mods? The game has rather good mod support. Everything from minor tweaks to what are effectively Total Conversions.

Check it out. I've downloaded a bunch, but have only gotten my hands on SM recently, so I can't say if they're any good from first hand experience.

I'd also suggest Jagged Alliance 2 and its mods if you can handle old graphics. I've heard interesting things about Dominions II, as well.

Give the demo a go...and tell me what you thing ;) I've heard it has a rather steep learning curve. I'm contemplating picking it up after I'm done with Silent Storm and AoWSM.

Oh yeah, there is also the Combat Mission series. It's essentially how simultaneous turn-based play should be done.

Well, Combat Mission is phased-based, and he said he was looking for AoW style games so he may not go for it. Great games, though. Afrika Corps is easily in my top ten.

Dominions 2 indeed has a step-learning curve, but the hardest part of it is managing the hideous interface. It's like trying to outwrestle a giant squid. But if you can manage it, there's some real fun to be had.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
Turn based strategy games... Hm.

Civ. 2: Good. Nothing special, though. Very addictive.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3: The best HoMM game. A lot like AoW.
Lords of Magic: Pretty unknown. A bit like AoW.
Master of Orion 2: Excellent 4x game.
Master of Magic: The best 4x game out there. Inspired AoW.
X-COM 1 & 2: If you haven't played those yet you haven't lived!

Hearts of Iron II! Even though its not exactly turn based, the 'turn' is an hour in game time and time ticks off by hours.

Anyway - the game simulates the time period 1936-1947, you can play any sovereign nation that existed at that time - from Germany (always a popular choice) to Peru. Each nation has its own political ideology and cabinets staffed by real people of that time, but you can change the ideology over time and replace political leaders as you see fit. This allows for scenarious like Canada slowly turning authoritarian, leaving the Alliance and invading the US. There is really no goal to the game besides ones you set yourself - how about world domination?

Combat is entirely strategic, occuring at the division level. Battles are affected by the terrain, time of day, the respective type/strenths of the opposing troops, leader traits, weather, the number of attack directions, land and coastal fortifications, organization and morale of the troops, supply efficiency, and combat events like counterattacks, assaults, encirclements and ambushes, which depend on your land doctrine and how far you have researched it.

Military leaders are based on real people - expect to meet Manstein, Guderian, Patton, Rokossovsky, Zhukov and tons of others. All of them have traits that approximate their skills and abilities in real life.

As for military units, you have air squadrons of fighters, escort fighters, interceptors, naval bombers, strategic bombers and tactical bombers. Land forces can have regular infantry, motorized, mechanized, armoured, marines and airborne (you want these) divisions. There are destroyers, carriers, battleships, subs and everything you would expect of that time period.

Get the latest patch, as it makes the AI much better at front management.

This is starting to look like a PR review, but this game is really good, and if you haven't tried it, you should.

Yep, Hearts of Iron 2 is extremely deep and challenging, and a very rewarding experience. And the Cold War expansion is looking spiffy as well.

Combat Mission is one of the most difficult games I've played, but it's very enjoyable, and even has pretty good graphics.

galactic civilizations 2 has already been mentioned, so I'd have to recomend 'Democracy', It's a country-running sim game, bit complex, but pretty addictive too, and you can buy it online.

I preferred Alpha Centauri over Civilization

Me also, however i'm finding Civ4 to be a big improvement over older games in the series (not just shiny 3d!).

Yeah, I enjoyed FFT as well, for its time. I also enjoyed Front Mission 3, which was the last japanese SRPG I played. Kartia was another good one, and Tactics Ogre as well. On the PC front, aside from the mainstays like JA2 and Silent Storm, I'd also have to heartily recommend Disciples and the HOMM series.

Civ 3.

I didn't like Starcraft that much (you could only select so many units at one time was my main problem). I also don't like Civ4 simply because I hate the new combat system. I like RPG's but I don't care for it in this type of game.

The Civilization games have combat systems?

EDIT: For consoles, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Very competent mix of strategy and tactical combat. #8 (PS2) is arguably the best.

Well in Civ 1 2 and 3 the units had Attack and Toughness points, plus any modifiers which would be the terrain. That's it.

In Civ4 they just have a strength. Some units have bonus given to them by experience points and to mention each unit is weaker/stronger against certain other units. It's suppose to be better but I find it annoying.

Check out my massive package.
Shoe-ins:

-Civ 2
-Civ 4 (I too like SMAC more from a conceptual standpoint but Civ4 has such a better interface that it's much more rewarding to play)
-SMAC/SMAX
-HOMM3
-AoW: Shadow Magic
-X-COM (tactical TBS)
-Jagged Alliance 2 (tactical TBS)

Other good-uns:

-GalCiv (well, just wait on GalCiv2, which comes out Feb 21)
-Dominions 2 (need to play multiplayer though, SP AI is atrocious)

I second the King of Dragon Pass and Dominions 1/2 suggestions. Both are worth looking at, the first for uniqueness, the second for scope.

For older stuff, Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye. Beats even Master of Magic in my book.
