Virtua Fighter. Aka Virtua Fighter 6. Aka New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project

I wonder if character models will take damage like a boxing game would do. In the Virtua Fighter Direct video the games producer (Riichiro Yamada) says:

When I took charge of this project the biggest question I asked myself was; “What is Virtua Fighter?” Considering the fact that we’re making a new Virtua Fighter, I felt this was the most important question to answer. Opinions may differ depending on the person, but the answer I arrived at was “innovation” and “reality.” And those are the feelings that I worked into this video. Constantly challenging the innovations and realities of the current day had always been part of the series’ DNA, and now, we will continue that with this newest installment. That is what I believe to be the most important element for the new Virtua Fighter. Our goal with this project is to make every aspect of it feel fresh and exciting. Character designs, the battle system, and a teaser trailer are just a small portion of what we’re working on.

Something interesting about the footage they showed in the teaser is they’re going back to the more traditional Virtua Fighter thing of not having big hit sparks. There were a couple moves that had dust come off them like a kung fu movie would do, but none of the hits have big Tekken explosions or the kind of hit sparks that were added to the last couple versions of VF5.

The stage they’re fighting in also seems kind of big. It doesn’t seem traditional Virtua Fighter ring stage, it looks like it might go on like a Dead of Alive stage. I’m not sure they’re bring back uneven ground, but it seems like they may have more of a variety of stage types like VF3 had again.

Looks good!

The gameplay in particular looks faster than any entry in the series

Seems fun
The animations are excellent, the new soundfx are meaty and stage is super detailed

Though since that particular stage they showed doesn't have any way to "ring out", I do wonder if this some change to mechanics as well (possibly something like a block meter)

Akira's redesign is cool
I guess Sega really took to heart the common complains that characters looked generic

To be honest, I do think what always held back VF commercial success compared to Tekken, was the fact that the former's presentation (character designs, graphcis, sound fx and yes story) was overall less appealing than the latter

I know they are doing this game for the commemoration of the series 30th anniversary, but this was good timming imo
There's no better time for a Virtua Fighter revival than now
The prospect of a "simple" fundamentals-heavy game with no gauges or conditional mechanics has funnily enough become a breath of fresh air

It's what makes sense, VF has always been the more "grounded" of every major fighting game franchise

Virtua Fighter, at least in the arcade days, maybe up to Virtua Fighter 3, was the bigger of the two series. Tekken sold better on consoles since it was PSX and Virtua Fighter is Saturn, but Virtua Fighter was the biggest money making fighting game behind Street Fighter 2.

And you have one well-known series and another unknown one. Of course the former is gonna win. Virtua Fighter was the king of the 3D fighting game series and the other ones (like Tekken and Dead or Alive) looked up to it/copied it. Personally, it's the only 3D fighting game series I really enjoyed watching...well, maybe Soul Calibur a bit, but the rest, meh.

I used to love Virtua Fighter 2 at the arcades, I would dominate kids older than me at it.
