I am sure he said that as a joke since it's word for word from right in some of the interviews
I made that point in my first response and he came back on it, so I assumed he was mad. If he was joking that's fine.
I don't think there's anything wrong with selling engine content if you can manage it. Most of it is from Unity users, too. They just get a cut.
I don't like the way they do it, because they take advantage of addictive personality types, just like casinos do. All portals use the same tactics and Unity is becoming a portal.
As for Unity users getting a cut, most of the people that make the goods, don't get much of anything, because the customers are trained to buy, only during sales. Of course Unity will make it up on volume, the house always wins. As I said, I have seen this all before with Daz3D and heard the sellers complain about the money they were not making. They really did not like the sales.
It wouldn't surprise me if they give Unity Pro away free, in the next couple of years. I assume they already have the shop hooked up to Unity? If they haven't already done so, they will. Unity3D will be exactly like Daz Studio if that happens.
The only sinister note is that they seem to be saying this in regard to mods. Hey guys we're gonna make it super easy to mod. Just get your credit card ready and we'll show you how!
Yeah I saw that as well. Any marketing guy would see it as a huge opportunity.
