Again, the guys were experimenting stuff. It's easy to say "lol, people that said Earth was flat are dumb" now we know they are completly wrong, but at the time it was what everyone believed and thought to be right.

To err is human BRO, to insist is BioWare.

I think you're a little rose-colored there, felipepepe. It wasn't about experimenting, it was about "wanting to be more like a movie studio". It's pretty self-evident why that's a bad idea, and even if you want to experiment with it, do it in a fitting scale and not as the overwhelming drive of the company, including the whole Universal deal.

Holy shit. Mr. Fargo is inclining the shit out of this. It's either going to be the best CRPG or the biggest disappointment of the past 10 years.

Although some quick Googling makes it seem as though Brian Fargo is the only one that has stayed in the video game industry (since post-Wasteland times even) and the other guys have been pulled out of retirement. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe they're untainted by modern video games and will design it with 1980's design philosophies in mind. :smug:

Now we just have to give them Fallout 1+2, Planescape Torment and Jagged Alliance 2 and say that this are the only games released since their absence. They should study them intensively and use them together with the original Wasteland as a benchmark how an rpg should be designed.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
"Turn-based", "isometric" and "fixed camera" have nothing to do with whether a game is an RPG
The camera doesn't, of course. Turn-based does though.
Civilization
What does that have to do with anything?

He's saying that Civ is an RPG according to you fucking retards.

The reality is that RPG is a parasite genre that adds an extra dimension to an already existing genre. Every RPG is, at its core an (usually very shitty) already existing genre with player driven character development added on top of it. It's why secondary characteristics like "turn-based" are not and cannot be part of the definition.

No one said that all turn-based games are RPGs.

If being turn-based has something to do with whether a game is an RPG then it's part of the definition.

By what logic would you conclude, that turn-basedness is in any way required to make an RPG? Darklands, Dungeon Master, Baldurs Gate, etc. are not proper RPGs?

Not really. The definition leads to it.

There are no "proper RPGs" because it's not black and white. There's a whole scale of "RPGness". But to put it simply, if you took a classic turn-based RPG and changed it so that the turns are timed (5 seconds each, for example), would the game be just as much an RPG as it was previously? If you believe it would be then fair play to you. Your definition is different to mine. If you believe it wouldn't be then that's a pretty significant sign.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
There's such a thing as a game being more RPG or less RPG. It scores higher on that scale depending on how RPG-like it is, how close it is to an ideal RPG, which exists only as an idea and can be approximated as the quintessence of our favorite RPGs, but better. There's a certain drop-off on this scale when a game ceases to be an RPG all-together, but it's very hard to pinpoint because of the many fine degrees that exist on that scale.

And that's why we argue about this. Again and again.

Correct. We argue again and again where to draw the line on this scale, hence debates about Mass Effect and family. If everything was merely black and white then we wouldn't have any such debates.

The people who said that the Earth was flat were indeed dumb, or perhaps lived their entire lives in narrow valleys or dense forest where you can never see the horizon. There are simple observations that can easily show you that the Earth is not flat, and they have been made time and time again throughout history by smart people.
