This is precisely why wizards got gutted and rightfully so.

When it's easier to solo the game with wizards than keeping a full party alive there's a big issue.

Wrong. The most powerful classes to solo the game are multiclass.

IMO the best edition on D&D for martial combat is 2e, for magical warfare is 3.5e. For streamlined combat 5e.

Those are all mage multiclasses, they are wizards.

Illusionists have always been given the shaft in every single computer roleplaying game they've ever been a choice in.

I actually started BG1 playing an illusionist when it was first released and it was a horrible choice.

Never take an illusionist. Computer games just aren't capable of reproducing what they're supposed to be capable of.

Druids and Clerics allow to cast with armor, just saying...

EDIT : Fighters/Mages on epic level rarely attack with spells. Quite contrary. They cast haste, stoneskin, Black blade of disaster, tenser transformation and go kil lthe enemy with -20 THAC0, 10 attacks per round 40 pts of average damage per strike and force the enemy to do 10 saves vs death or be slain per round...

Well, Illusionists aren't THAT bad. Mirror image is one of the spells that i miss most for my necromancer wizard. Project image can give a lot of more spells to cast costing a tier 7 spell. Shadow door allow you to bypass traps. Simulacrum is considered the best non offensive spell. True sight is a must have spell. On beamdog's forum, Illusionists and Necromancers are considered the best specialization among 7% of users ( https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/3640/favourite-mage-specialisation-bg-series/p1 )

And a lot of people chose conjuration over necromancy to not lose illusion spells
