<strong>[ Game -> Update ]</strong>

<p><a title="sds" target="_self" href="http://www.ea.com/official/lordoftherings/bfme2/us/">Battle for Middle-Earth II</a>, the game that makes your IQ drop and proud of it!, has <a title="har" target="_self" href="http://www.ea.com/official/lordoftherings/bfme2/us/editorial.jsp?src=Gold">gone gold</a> and is expected to hit the shelves on March 2nd, Year of Our <a title="dd" target="_self" href="http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/x-com-ufo-defense">Lord</a> 2006.</p><blockquote><p>

"<em>The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II</em>
offers a unique opportunity to truly experience all of Middle-earth and
introduce a depth of the The Lord of the Rings fiction we&rsquo;ve never
explored," said <strong>Mike Verdu, Executive Producer at EALA</strong>. "By
visualizing the Tolkien fiction in the vision of the New Line Cinema
film trilogy, combined with a number of new gameplay innovations, all
of Middle-earth is now truly yours to control."</p></blockquote><p>But how do those "innovations" play out? Let's ask those poor, pitiful people who played the massive 1.3GB <a title="ddd" target="_self" href="http://www.ea.com/official/lordoftherings/bfme2/us/demodownload.jsp">demo</a>:</p><blockquote><p><span class="postbody">The 2 new factions are shit. Dwarves are
basically midget Gondor soldiers (without the cavalry), and Goblins are
Mordor, but without oliphants. Totally pointless.</span> </p><p><span class="postbody">
-no units on the walls, and ranged units can't shoot over the walls,
which makes them a bit on the useless side. I guess EA decided the
overpowered archers of the original needed balancing... </span></p></blockquote><p>Sounds fun! </p>

From what I played of the demo, NL may be right about this game. It seems like its made for fans of the franchise and not strategy gamers. Way to many of the features just ssem like a way to throw in stuff from the movie or the books.

One problem I kept having was the game economy and the way units could behave. Its to your advantage to build as many mines/tunnels as possible. However, I couldn't always get wall or towers around to defend them. Then the enemy would just walk past all my towers to the very back of the base and attack units there. This game could seriously benefit from some sort of zone of control mechanic. Oh, and units gaining levels is not well implemented in my professional opinion. Just way to much micromanaging involved if you want to take it seriously.

The game wasn't made to appeal to real fans of the books, but rather the 12-year-olds who saw the movies and went "Coooooolll" over all the CGI and awesome sword fights. It's nothing more than quick cash grab, which is basically what all of EA's games boil down to. Hell, that's all EA does now: Grab cash at everyone else's expense.

it's even a poorly thought out cash grab. they had a ready-made system over at Games Workshop that, even though it's a bit simpler than either Warhammer or 40K, works a hell of a lot better than this crap. Had they simply licensed it and built on it the game could "cash in" on the movie and at least be entertaining.

EA doesn't care about being entertaining, though. They know that morons will buy their games no matter what so why should they focus on such trivial matters like "gameplay."

"We are visualizing the Tolkien fiction in the vision of the movies by adding armies never visualized in the movies"

Makes sense somehow.
