Why is the state of competitive fps games so bad?

The skill floor is high because people actually knew how to play back then and the situation is even worst now, after so many years.
Are you actually that deluded to believe that in a time when competition was scarce (mostly because of technical difficulties) people knew how to play better?

Dude you embarrass yourself further with every post. Gaming wasn't a normie thing to do back then. People who played competitive shooters actually generally cared about being good at the game. That was the culture back then. Yes absofucking lutely sitting there waiting on MIRC for pick up games consisted of people 1000x more dedicated and skilled then the shitshow we have now when everyone and their dog games.

Yea your the dude who talked about PHDs having no clue either. Did no one teach you not to speak of shit you have no clue about? Holy fuck its serriously getting annoying reading your low effort shitposts.

Its like star wars, you arent really a Jedi (neckbeard) until you build your own lightsaber (PC). That used to be the enthusiasts domain, now its just every cunt and his shitty laptop plays games, rabble rabble kids on my lawn.

Take any sport, countries/regions where they are generally accepted and practiced by "normies" are far ahead. Skill evolves through real competition and large talent pools not feeling special in your little pond.
Btw, where was I wrong about phds?

Yea the more players in a pool the better top players will be that is obvious. But do i really have to do the thinking for you? That fact is true within a single game. Soccer doesn't become "casual soccer 2" because more people start playing it. More people in dota or cs means better competition.

However we are talking about a direction of games within entire genre. In games you can have more and more people playing CS/TF and entire new games emerge like wait for it - OW. Do sports develop casual versions of themselves? No? Then it obviously doesn't apply.

But even within sports when something like soccer is the national sport large % of people will be casual shitters and more obscure sports will have small but dedicated competitive groups simply because if they were normies they would be playing said soccer. In fact you can think of video games exactly this way. Normies played basketball/soccer or whatever while small dedicated group competed in quake, cs or whathave you.

You convinced me. Tic Tac Toe must have the greatest skill cap ever. 3 billion children can't be wrong.

Actually your analogy with football is that way back, when they were breaking their feet in dirt, before it became mainstream, there were better players because they were more dedicated and the game was more hardcore. That's the level of delusion you are at.

Top fps players these days are considerably more skilled than they were back in the "glory days". There's a reason fatality could hop from new released shooter to new released shooter and win tournaments. Hell, WCG quake/ut were mostly shitshows compared to cs (or sc, or the fighting games) because their segregated "hubs" were way too small to allow for decent practice.

And cut the memeing bullshit, CS/OW are shooters with very high skill caps, no random bullshit elements. Any of the skilled players would have no problems translating to something like Quake/UT.

BTW, majority of top quake players could very well be qualified as "normies". Sulk that in your deluded "elitist" brains.

The thing that really pisses me off is that somehow, the mongoloids trying to make arena shooters have the same deluded shit stuck in their heads. That's why we end up with half assed games, most absurd marketing and dwindling player bases.

OW has okay mechanics and some fun interactions, but it's a team game not a dueling one + meta is so god damn boring (it was terrible before, but now there's mercy in every game)... blizzard just can't into comp games. And before you say BW, it was 20 years ago and most people that worked on it are long gone.

CSGO is shit compared to 1.6. Mechanically inferior in every way except smokes (more first shot rng, worse movement, no wallbangs, shit sounds, neutered quickscoping etc.).

So the answer would be - inept devs and/or inept management + lack of proper competition on the market (it didn't matter as much back in the day when gamedev wasn't that big of a money printing machine).

Team Fortress 2 is a more casual version of traditional competitive shooters... and Overwatch is far more casual than TF2 with probably a third of the actual strategy. Hell, you still retain your super power charge on death in Overwatch. All 'e-sports' today are merely marketing tools and Blizzard is the most shameless pusher of casual crap.

Not losing ult on death is a hilariously awful design decision and instantly renders half the cast useless. In TF2 sniping a Medic gave you a huge advantage. In Overwatch pick classes are minor nuisances at best because the Mercy or whatever will just respawn with full ult in five seconds.
