Good to know on Golem. I never tried again after my 486 run. It was slow and crashed a lot. The setting is fantastic and is what inspired me to try and get the books and tabletop RPG.

Update 1995 Mayfair Games Fantasy Adventures Card Game
Fantasy_Adventures_CCG.jpg

It was adapted from Mayfair's Encounters card game.[1] The base set included 450 cards.[1] It was sold in 100-card fixed starter decks and 15-card booster packs.[2] The Wheel of Time expansion was pushed back to a late summer release to coincide with release of a Robert Jordan novel, but neither it nor the World of Aden expansion ever materialized.[1][3] The game featured exceptional art for the time.[4]

No sense looking anymore.

The "upgrade" to the Golem was more of a downgrade, it lowered it's HP, removed Axe/Mace skill and gave it Bows, Guns and Martial Arts. What a ripoff.
I more or less agree with all your points except this one. The golem is a poor, or average at best, melee fighter. The other party members deal 95% of the damage. With the new focus on ranged combat and the gun/crossbow he gets, the golem becomes way more powerful. Even if many endgame enemies are immune to arrow damage he still was way more useful after than before, at least in my playthroughs.

I never bothered with ranged weapons because they seemed to do pitiful damage. Maybe I'll check them out if I ever replay this.

Most are not worth it, melee reigns supreme, but the one the golem gets when he is upgraded is the most powerful of the game IIRC. That being said, the game is easy enough to accomodate for at least one ranged fighter in a party, ranged doesn't suck that bad. If only to wield muskets and steam weapons since you don't get to do it in many fantasy RPGs.
