JA1 is definitely worth playing. Be warned it looks like it is from another era. The 5 years between 1994 and 1999 were huge in terms of video game tech.
JA-Deadly Games on the other hand... meh. I found it mediocre.
You can craft your own campaign in Deadly Games and play multiplayer, with 2 multiplayer was added by fans. Deadly Games is different from the other 2 games because no big campaign of conquest but timed missions and it gives the vibe of "every day life of mercenary" while you have the band of heroes in JA1 and 2.
There used to be a ton of user made campaigns, many quite fun and lengthy. That's the main reason to consider playing it, if you can't get enough JA but grew bored of the original campaign.
Kinda hard to go back to after JA2 though, as has been mentioned.

Lol some Pole came to russian JA2 fan forum and got banned for being passive aggressive retard trying to preach his "love" of russians.
The Poles just can't help themselves, they will be someone guest and still try to shit on the carpet. If it wasn't for the russians the JA2 modding scene would be completely dead, as the american modders had moved on/lost interest completely. There are still misguided people developing the 1.13 further, but most of community still sits at 7609 -thanks to the sevenfm AI mod. The further version ie. higher than 7609 brings so much fucking bloat -7609 already brought bloat with radio operator, artillery and even food system which doesn't mix well with other mechanics and food availability. There's even disease module right now, who the fuck thinks that changing this game to some cripple survival game is a good idea? You can't just throw some mechanics without fleshing other mechanics creating interlocking experience where those mechanics doesn't feel like separate clunky entity.
