But its design was already dated when it was just released.
Lol, name a blobber that did more to innovate and modernize the genre.

Also, as darth canoli already explained, the scaling in Wiz8 is not modern-crpg scaling. It's just areas having certain set of monsters assigned to them, kinda like what BG2 does. You can still be over- or unerleveled for content, but you can also encounter weird stuff if you break the sequence too much, because Wiz8 allows a lot of freedom and potential retardation that can come with it (like grinding stealth to 100 in the first location).

Even without chameleon/portal spells/portal hubs, you can avoid lots of encounters if you have eyes and a keyboard with a shift key. But if you're someone who buys into "every encounter takes 30 minutes!" and "why are there random respawns, this has never happened in any blobber, ever!?!?!" memes then the best solution is probably to concede that the game is just not for you.

Brenda was the only writer and the lead designer of Wizardry 8:

That's something that Wizardry 8 fanboys try to forget.

Not really, why would we. I appreciate early Ultima despite thinking Garriott is a bit loony, D. W. Bradley was as well, lets not talk about the Neanderthal. If I would avoid creative works just because I can't stand its creator, then I would cut myself off from a lot of great works

Agreed, yes the few things that always stood out to me

Best keyword-based conversion system to date
Best & smartest party banter of all time
First (and sadly only) implementation of blobber-like phase-based combat that's not grid-based and allows some tactics you can't do in any other blobber
Art direction that makes it look timeless

Edit: Okay. Wizardry 8 portrait editor can browse through sounds. Of course it can.
